Possibly blocked exhaust or cataletic convertor this causes check engine light to flash as it could be going into cataletic convertor protection mode.
have you got any codes stored for fuel trim or O2 sensor codes?
is cooling system ok?
sounds like its going into overheating protection mode

My 2002 a-6 3.0 suddenly started running rough-engine light is on and blinks at 45mph. runs doggedly

Check oil and coolant levels (at the radiator cap) first. Run fault codes to find which sensor triggered the engine light . The light is to tell you that the engine is in danger of failure so do not dismiss the light as not important.. Hot smells mean that the engine is very hot and you may not have any coolant in the system to activate the temp light or gauge.

I would have the catilitic converter checked. when they clog up you loose power and burn more fuel it could also explain the hot engine as the exaust can not escape. hope this helps!

How can you tell when your cadillac converter is going ? Sometimes I smell rubber. I wonder if that has anything to do with the converter.

If your catalytic converter is "going" you will smell sulfuric acid (boiled eggs) when the vehicle is running, and even after it stops - as long as the exhaust system is still hot. Another symptom is a totally "dead" vehicle. Catalytic converters can completely clog up, blocking the exhaust system and preventing the vehicle from starting/running. Your smell of rubber could be one of many, many things, but I would suggest first checking under the hood to see if any hoses or wires are showing melt marks or just sitting too close to hot engine parts.

Leaking coolant, oil, poorly running, won't shift into gears now

First determine where coolant loss comes from. I would not continue driving, till that step is isolated, or further damage will be done
