Hi my name is nick... I have a 1991 celica sx 5sfe engine. Problems 1. vibration in a particular speed 80-100 kmh, checked wheel balance and alignment still? 2. some times car becomes sluggish and chokes to move? 3. have a K& n airfilter installed do i have to make a change in the edu for fuel and air ratio, if so how? 4. clutch was replaced 5000 kms back still soft and not like before ??? pls help me i am in Melbourne Australia.

Check 5 things Balance, (including road force that checks the integrity of your rims).
Tires if they are cup, they vibrate the vehicle at high speed.
Wheel bearings for movement. Tied rod ends for looseness,
If you brake and rotors pulsate, those rotors will create vibration at high speed.

Why does it vibrate between 65 and 75 mph?

bent drive shafts /out if balance drive shafts
faulty tires
warped disc rotors
wheel bearing failure or out of adjustment

My truck starts vibrating when I get to 75 mph, but stops when I get to 85 mph...has anyone else had this problem?


Hi Mitzi
Vibration is caused when you reach the particular harmonic frequency. At a certain speed.
Go past that harmonic and it disappears.
Usually by some rotating part.
A wheel. The tailshaft etc.
It's off centre or out of balance.
Lead weights on the wheel counteract this.
If not a wheel check the tail shaft.

Your brake caliper and/or brake hose is hanging up not allowing fluid pressure to release. Most likely your brake rotor is already warped from excessive heat also. Replace caliper(loaded or unloaded) and hose ,bleed brake system and you're good to go.

Loud grinding noise (a bit like a football rattle) at the front of a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee, dependant on road speed not engine revs, It virtually disappears in reverse. Any idea's? Thanks Pete


Hi, Going throught this one myself, I have had front diff open = OK, transfer case = OK, Auto = Ok. found out that a few have had problems with front bushes ( rubber joints) which I replaced recently, they are harder than the gen part and will vibrate causing a "drone" sound at certain speeds, particularly 40-60 kmh and 100kmh (iam in Australia).
If you have replace your bushes or thery may have become hard????

You don't give any details about the vibration, you know what "strange" means but the rest of us have to make a guess.

The most likely cause is that the wheels are out of balance. This can happen if you've recently struck a kerb or pothole, if an existing balance weight has fallen off, if you have recently removed a wheel and refitted it, or if you've had a tyre repaired or replaced without having the wheel rebalanced afterwards.

There are many other potential causes, but getting the wheel balancing checked and adjusted is the cheapest and easiest thing to start with. Get the balancing checked and then report back if the problem is not resolved.

Car shaking and vibrating at 55 mph. and does it again at 65-70.


Hi:
Since your BMW 540 series is a rear wheel drive car, a common cause of that sort of vibration is often the U joints on your drive shaft. The vibration often only shows up and certain speeds.

It isn't a particularly expensive repair, but is something to have checked out!

I have 1990 saab 900 turbo, it is vibrating a lot when i accelerate after 50 mph, wheels are balanced, its definitly a power related thing and the exahuast shakes alot also from this vibration....bit of a...


Hi John:

First suggestion would be to have the three engine mounting bushings checked out, these dampen the normal engine vibrations and if they have failed (gone soft, perhaps from contamination by oil, or just age) they don't restrain the engine. Polyurethane is possibly the best replacement.

I'm assuming that there are no other problems with the engine through it's rev range, until you get to that speed? And that the engine otherwise runs smoothly, even after that speed?

The other possibility is imbalance in the axle half shafts. Did you have the wheels balanced on the car? That might balance all the rotating parts.

Toyota celica 1990 5sfe auto


The 5sfe is notorious for distributor problems. You'll get correct resistance readings on the primary and secondary coils, but your spark looks weak. Should see a bright blue spark with an audible POP when sparking. On some 5sfe engines, the coils are located in an all-in-one pacakage inside the distributor. You'll know if you have this one if the only large spark plug type wires connected to the distributor cap count 4 and go to the 4 cylinders. There will not be a center wire coming from a coil. This is the distributor that has issues. I am on my third one now. Same symptoms every time. I know exactly what to change when it happens, and it fixes it every time. Luckily, It's only about $95 if you do your searching well enough. Good luck
