They don't test them separate from one another all they are going to tell me is that the battery is fine and the alternator isn't charging. Everything is new, there are 2 different alternators a 6 wire and a 5 wire. I needed the 5 wire but didn't know there was a difference until I got a 6 wire from Auto Zone and it was putting out 17 volts which got me to reading the paper work on it to find out that I needed a 5 wire. Now the 5 wire won't charge, but I don't know if the other alternator putting out 17 volts burnt the regulator up which was new or if I just got a bad alternator.

I'd take alternator back (I know hassle) have them test it and if good have them warranty your voltage reg. NOTE: be cool w/them (from a former parts guy) as much as hassle this whole thing has been, don't let your anger pop up - they'll make life more difficult - be "diplomatic" and they'll bend over backwards to help you.

Car makes very loud screeching noise.

It could be that the air conditioning compressor clutch is not working properly. The clutch should allow the pully to freewheel when the air conditioner is not used.
You can have your battery tested at.an auto parts store, and you can test the alternator by removing a battery cable while the engine is running. The alternator is what powers all the electrical systems while the engine is running. If the engine stops running when the cable is removed, this means that the engine was running from the battery and not the alternator.
Your alternator or your regulator is bad.
Regulators are an internal part of alternators, unless its a pre 70's.car where they were a separate external unit.
Hope this is helpful.

Hey i have a 1993 ford bronco four wheel drive with the 5.8 engine. I have had the alternator checked and its good and the battery is good but it will not charge. Its running on just the battery, Do you...

You need to check your alternator circuits. If the alternator itself tests good (I am assuming it was removed from the vehicle and taken to a parts store for testing) then the only thing left are the alternator circuits themselves. The large BLACK/ORANGE wire needs to have direct connection to the battery. This connection needs to be clean and tight with little or no resistance....This needs to be checked with an ohm-meter to verify. The rest of the circuits depend on what your vehicle is equipped with. 1993 Ford Broncos were originally equipped with two different charging systems. One had an integral regulator (regulator built into the alternator) and an external regulator. (voltage regulator mounted on the fender, separate from the alternator.) If you have the external regulator, that is what I would suspect as the cause of your problem. If you have the internal regulator, then I would check for battery voltage on the two BLACK/ORANGE wires and the YELLOW/WHITE wire at all times, and the LIGHT GREEN/RED wire should have battery voltage only with the key in the ON position.

My '81 Ford F100 keeps losing power once I start it up. It'll crank, but will die out 3 times before I even make it out of my driveway. Once it's in drive, it seems to go fine, but when I come to a stop...

The voltage regulator can be internal-inside alt. or external-on fender well usaully but the fact that you are able to have batt power to crank engine- which takes alot more than just running, does not lead me to believe that batt is low or alt. not charging. If it has carburator, open idle mixture screws 1/2 turn, if fuel injected possible idle air control motor (IAC) motor at throttle body is bad. I thought those engines were still carburated though.

How do I remove the alternator from a 93 ford bronco?

IDENTIFICATION

There are 4 different types of alternators found on the years and model ranges covered in this information:

  1. Rear Terminal, External Regulator, External Fan Alternator
  2. Side Terminal, Internal Regulator, External Fan Alternator
  3. Leece-Neville 165 Ampere Alternator
  4. Integral Rear Mount Regulator, Internal Fan Alternator

Rear Terminal, External Regulator, External Fan Alternator
This unit utilizes a separate, external electronic regulator. The regulator is non-adjustable. The rear terminal alternator was standard equipment on 1987 trucks, and can be found on some 1992 motor home chassis models equipped with the 7.3L diesel or 7.5L gasoline engine.
Side Terminal, Internal Regulator, External Fan Alternator
This unit was optional on 1987, standard on all 1988-92 models and standard on 1993-96 models equipped with the 4.9L and 7.5L engines. The regulator in integrated within the alternator body and is not adjustable.
Integral Rear Mount Regulator, Internal Fan Alternator
This alternator is standard equipment on all 1993-96 models equipped with 5.0L, 5.8L gasoline engines and 7.3L diesel engines (except the 1996 F-Super Duty models).
Leece-Neville 165 Ampere Alternator
This unit is optional equipment on some 1989-94 trucks and ambulance packages. A separate, electronic, fully adjustable regulator is employed in this system.
Mitsubishi 215 Ampere Alternator
This unit is found on 1996 F-Super Duty models equipped with the 7.3L diesel engine. The regulator is integral and the fan is external.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Remove the adjusting arm bolt.
  3. Remove the alternator through-bolt. Remove the drive belt from the alternator pulley and lower the alternator.

Some engines are equipped with a ribbed, K-section belt and automatic tensioner. A suitable tool must be made to remove the tension from the tensioner arm. Loosen the idler pulley pivot and adjuster bolts before using the tool..
  1. Label all of the leads to the alternator so that you can install them correctly and disconnect the leads from the alternator.
  2. Remove the alternator from the vehicle.
  3. To install, reverse the above procedure. Observe the following torques:

Pivot bolt: 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm) Adjusting bolt: 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm) Wire terminal nuts: 60-90 inch lbs. (6.8-10.1 Nm)

Altenator issues i think ???

should have a fuse for the alternator, most likely blown. If the fuses are not labeled, use a test light to find out which one is bad and replace it. Possibly could have a bad fusible link instead of fuse with the age of the car.

Charging Problem 1993 toyota pickup

Hello! I too am PA St Insp Mechanic.

Here are some suggestions:

Note that the Fuel injection computer starts to cease to work properly at 10.5 VDC. This leads me to a voltage issue. You mentioning that the veh has bright headlamps may be consuming more power than the alt can deliver, with the heater, the lights and the other "normal" draws.

Test the alt output with a voltmeter, plus to plus, minus to minus, at the battery. You should read 14 + volts with all of the above mentioned accessories on, at idle. 11-12 volts = bad alternator, unless the belt is real slipping bad. 14.4 is the spec.

Also, the Voltage Regulator in inside the alternator.

Glad to provide assistance to you; please rate my help with a FixYa, I would be very grateful.
