First to replace struts you need spring compressor and misc front end tools... if you're a novice, it's best left to a shop - trust me, Unless you have air tools and a LARGE toolbox, I rec taking it to a shop. Shop around there are tons of shops that offer specials and prices are pretty competitive.
Re: miss - try replacing spark plug wire. If wire is bad, current is weak firing that plug, which then fouls out. Replace plug again when you replace wire.

Have you checked the distributer cap and the lead to number 5? as far as your suspension goes it seems just from a quick look at the diagram it looks like you will need a set of coil spring compressors to remove the insert of the front strut but you may be able to buy a complete unit.

My olsdmobile aroua needs shocks. about what is the cost on shocks installed? Jim Fields

Your car has struts. The strut cartridges are about $80.00/ea and require some special tools. You have to take the whole assembly out of the vehicle and then using a special set of tools, compress the spring that is attached to the strut. Once the front struts have been replaced an alignment is needed. depending on labor rates in your area, figure about 2 hrs. for the strut change and then what ever an alignment costs. I think about $400.00 is in the ballpark.

Shocks

Struts have big springs around them and they need to be compressed to change the strut. These compressed spring store a large amount of energy and can be very dangerous when handled improperly. This requires special tools and skills. Also after changing struts a wheel alignment is necessary. Unless you are a very experienced do it yourselfer changing struts is probably not something you should try. Take it to a shop.

How do you install the shocks on a 1994 Chevy Lumina?

This model doesn't have shocks. It damps bouncing with McPherson struts. The front struts can have a new cartridge installed while in place, but it's an involved process. The rear struts have to be removed to replace the struts -- a more involved process that requires some special tools. The struts last a lot longer than shock absorbers, but are not nearly as easy to change when the time comes.

struts in the front, shocks in the rear. struts take what are called cartridges, they require special tools to replace, shocks are just simple hand tools and very easy to replace.
