I keep needing to add coolant every couple of days. It drys up, but the thermostat does not register over heating? What could it be?

Your radiator cap is not pressurized or the coolant is leaking. look for leaks first

I have a 96 Jetta GL and I just replaced the thermostat in it because I have no hot air coming out of the vents and now my car is running hot. What is the problem and how could I fix it?

I replaced my radiator on my 2004 with a 2.2 and it seems like the thermostat is not opening. It can not get the air out. It seem to just to over heat and push the coolant out. Randy

My 99 alero v6 is over heating not leaking ight mite be hoses or thermostat . or head gasket but when it overb heats the smoke comes from the top of the engine

Just changed out the waterpump. fluid in resevoir full, maybe to full, is this a problem. No heat coming out of dash?

CHANGE THE THERMOSTAT BECAUSE AFTER A MOTOR OVERHEATS THE WAX
DIAPHRAGM IN THE THERMOSTAT BECOMES DISTORTED

Just replaced my thermostat on 2004 Impala. Temperature guage goes from cold to hot then goes back down. Heat seems to work when the temperature guage is lower but as soon as it goes up the heat turns...


i going to assume you have the 3.4L or 3.8 L motor
these motors are notorious for trapping air in coolant system
which sounds like what your problem is
not a problem tho they have bleeder screw built into them
there should be one or two bleeders (depending on model year and motor size)
i think yours should have two
one should be on top of thermostat housing
other one right above water pump on bypass tube
open one bleeder at time with motor running until u see just water and no air
repeat with other bleeder
continue to work back and forth between the two bleeders until thermostat opens
then work back and forth a couple times after thermostat opens
keep checking radiator add coolant as needed

Car over heated and shut off . was low on water .


Make sure when you add coolant to system, that you have heater running while filling it and be sure to bleed all air out of system. Keep a real close eye on coolant level for a while as you may have caused worse damage, and if you keep having to add coolant. It would also be smart to change thermostat before refilling system, but if not, keep a close eye on temperature gauge for a while to make sure it doesn't go too high, or jump erratically from cold to hot, indicating faulty thermostat. Check oil often as well.

No Heat and Overheating in 1999 Chevy Silverado


After replacing the thermostat, you must bleed the air from the cooling system.

To bleed air from the 2.2L and 2.5L engines, remove the plug or sensor on the top of the thermostat housing. Fill the radiator with coolant until the coolant comes out the hole. Since the plug is made out of steel and the thermostat housing is aluminum, it is a good idea to apply an anti-seizing compound or Teflon® tape on the plug threads prior to installation. Install the plug and continue to fill the radiator. This will vent all trapped air from the engine.

Any trapped air in the heating system will have to be displaced by coolant. Once the cooling system is filled, with the radiator cap off, turn of the heater at it's highest setting. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temp. You should see a drop in the coolant level as the air in the heating system is displaced by coolant. Add coolant to the proper level and replace the radiator cap.

Keep a close eye on the coolant level for at least the next couple of weeks. The cooling system is a "closed" system. Any significant decrease in coolant level indicates a problem.

Over heating and loss of coolant


Need to check your radiator flow, and thermostat, start the engine cold, with radiator cap off, watch for the water in the radiator, when it starts to bubble over let it, keep water hose close, radiator should blow back till the thermostat opens, the water will go down, and add more water if needed, and put the cap back on,,,, if your thermostat is stick closed it will cause over heating......and you may have to have it replaced.

the coolant lose is possibly causing the no heat problem. the lack of enough coolant to fill the heater core can cause it not to heat the car up. you need to find the leak. what engine you have????

Car overheating


If u dont have a leak, then the coolant aint the problem, my guess is its the thermostat, this is how it works, you turn the car on, the thermostat is closed, re-circulating the coolant in the engine block until the engine hits "normal" operating tempurate. When it reaches normal operating tempurate the thermostat opens allowing the hot coolant to cool down some what through the radiator, and continues to circulate, my guess is the thermostat is stuck closed, not allowing the hot coolant to escape thus keep on heating up til u smell it. The problem is i dont have a pontiac to tell you where the thermostat is located specifically, u can buy yourself a haynes manual for $20 or so to help u in future cases which is how i learnt most the stuff i know. All i know is if u follow the upper radiator hose away from the radiaotr to the engine block you should come across a bleed screw, its beyond that and the thermostat housing is attached to the engine block, in my impala you have to take apart the air duct and cleaner housing to even get close to it. It may be easier in the pontiac i dont know, u can buy a thermostat from an auto parts store, some some with a seal built in some dont, if they dont youll need a new seal too, shouldnt cost u more than about $15-20 to D.I.Y. Wish i could help you further. Good Luck
