How do you check the transmission fluid level in a 2001 Nissan Altima manual transmission

Hmmm... actually nobody can detect the level of the lubricant inside the transmission. The only way we do is unscrew the drain plug slowly( not opening it all the way ) and if some lubricant flows out that means u have gear oil!
At the age of ur car, u really have to drain the old one and refill it w/ new lubricants( additives for gears will help too! ).

Hope that helps u out!

How to change transmission fluid????

Transmission Fluid Replacement Replace transmission fluid as follows:
  1. Operate engine until reaching operating temperature.
  2. Turn OFF engine.
  3. Remove the drain plug.
  4. Drain the transmission fluid into a suitable container.
  5. Install drain plug.
    • Torque to: 22-29 lb-ft. (29-39 Nm)
  6. Refill fluid to specified level.
Fluid Type Specifications 4 Speed Automatic Transmission - Nissan Matic "D"
5 Speed Automatic Transmission - Nissan Matic "K"
NOTE: Using Automatic Transmission fluid other than Genuine Nissan ATF will cause deterioration in driveability and automatic transmission durability, and may damage the automatic transmission, which is not covered by the NISSAN new vehicle limited warranty

When should i change trans oil

One sure way to tell, is if your transmission fluid is not cherry red. Its supposed to be a bright red color. If its not, then you should have it flushed out and replaced. Good luck.
