Backup alert disabled

The backup alert on my 2004 Lincoln Town Car is suddenly disabled. I can not turn it back on, even through shutting the car off and restarting. Any ideas?

When first put in reverse the backup assist appears to be working. Then after a few seconds the sound goes off and the light says that the Paring Assist feature is deactivated.

SOURCE: 2000 Lincoln Town Car (Engine Service) found a EVAP System?

Check your gas cap. If someplace can test it you might luck out. This website advertises manuals and info online. The evaporator cannister is suppose to purify excess fuel vapors. But a system which is not sealed will code an error lamp.

SOURCE: Off light is lit on backup sensor button in dash

Push on the button and see if the light goes out. It can be a simple off-on switch.

If that does not work the owners manual will have info on using your MENU function in your instrument cluster. When you get into the correct screen there will be listings of HORN alert with the remote, and AUTOlock for your doors. The backup function is just another item to select. Most likely someone was looking to reset the oil warning interval and accidently reprogrammed the menu.

Backup park assistant shows disabled when backing up. It works sometimes but very seldon . I push the reset button but nothing happens, still wont't work.

This is a chronic problem with Ford products. One "cure" is to take your vehicle to a car wash and blast the transducers with high pressure water then park facing upward on a slope to allow water to drain. You may enjoy a fleeting moment of success. Another "cure" is replacement of the transducers.

Location of the Backup light switch.

I didn't find a location for the backup light switch,

But found the following on Autozone.com:

Backup Light Switch Operation:
00610_backup_light_switch.jpgAn open switch that prevents voltage from being applied to the backup lights until the vehicle is put in reverse. Putting the vehicle in reverse closes the contact and applies power to the rear back-up lights. Check under the dash or somewhere near the steering column if you have a column shifter. If the shifter closes or opens the backup light switch mechanically, one should be able to trace the cable and mechanisms that turn a cam that connects to the backup light switch, somehow. May have to disassemble the steering column area to see it.

Reverse sensor system does not work. When backing up and aproaching an object the backup sensor does not sound.

It is possibly a menu problem. Your information center has options for the bells and whistles that a Lincoln has. Your owners manual should tell you how to pull up the different catagories. A dealer may set this as a courtesy for you.
