The starter. had the same thing happen to mine, same year and have had mine for 7 years now too. great running little cars if you maintain them properly.

need to check the transmission fluid and you may have a bad torque converter give these websites a try www.alldatadiy.com and www.autozone.com if all fails stop by your local library and get your hands on a Haynes auto repair manual for your car wish you the best of luck Michigan Man.
i want to wire up my towbar to a 1996 ford escort 5 door, i have the colur codes for which coloured wires come from 7 pin but need to know which coloured wires are for what on my car for rear light
On the back side of the engine hard to reach area , jack the body up supporting it with proper stands lower the back engine craddle( use extreem caution) with a differant jack to reach starter .
If this is a manual transmission the clutch has burned out, it may need to be replaced, if you do not do your own mechanic work I would suggest that you take it to a good local repair shop and have them check it out. If this is an automatic I would still suggest the same, but the actual problem could be more complex. Hope this helps, let me know.
