I have a 1995 Cutlass Supreme SL, it has shifting problems. It will not come out of first gear, the speedometer doesn't work. I do have reverse, first gear and reverse are strong. I am thinking that this is an electronic problem. I have changed out the vehicle speed sensor, and I still have no change. I know I have an internal transmission speed sensor. I don't know if this transmission has to have the speedometer working for it to change gears, but how everything is electronic, it probably does. If anybody has any input, it would be appreciated

Hello
What you must do is have the system tested for fault codes. This transmission is shifted by a set of electric solenoids inside the transmission that are controlled by a computer (ECM), if they are malfunctioning they will set codes as well as other parts such as the speed sensor, You can run a fault code test with a GM scanner or you can do it manually by following the instructions at this link: http://www.extreme-check-engine-light-codes.com/GM%20OBD1%20Decoder.htm
Do the fault code test before you replace anymore parts. If you get codes you need to just type the code in to a goggle search window and tons of repair information will come up on possible causes.

Transmission has to be manually shifted. Downshifts on its own, and i can take off in 1st but only at very slow speed. 2nd and 3rd gear seem fine other than manually shifting.

u need a scan using factory or vehicle specific gear--values of components will be diplayd so an xperiencd tech can decyfr--littl code readers dont du it---w age of car certain sensors etc need replacin-believe that trans is electric controled--dont rplace any parts til uve isolated issue----------also go to magicmechanic online and checout the napa library on that model

My speedometer stopped working

If the speedo and odometer are both dead, you should have shifting problems and a check engine light. The speed sensor in the transmission has probably died.
If the speedo does not work but the odometer does, chances are the problem is in the speedometer head.

1995 oldsmobile cutlass ciera won't go in reverse

Without putting a scanner on the vehicle, ANYONE is only guessing but here is my 2 cents worth...

There a many popping noises and it could be Engine but since you lost Reverse at the same time...

I would also say that you broke the SUN SHELL inside your 4T60E Transmission and you lost Reverse, Second and 4th gear...

Car wont shift from 2nd gear and speedometer doesnt work. diagnostic code p0700. what does this mean?

the PO700 code is a generic transmission code. You would need access to a proper scan tool to check for transmission codes. However if you speedo isnt working, it sounds as though you have a bad output speed sensor. This part runs about 60.00 from the dealer, and is fairly easy to install. No speed signal will put the transmission into limp mode, and keep it stuck in 2nd gear.

1995 Olds Cutlass Supreme. My transmission is shot

Not sure exactly what you mean but the 4t60E comes with lots of different gear ratios. Just because a replacement one will bolt in doesn't mean it will work. If you are going to replace it, it needs to be the same gear ratio. If your car has a 3.1 I think the gear ratio is 3.33 and if its a 3.4 it is a 3.06

My 95 olds cutlass v6 3.1L sometimes wont shift out of third gear and it just completely shut off on the thruway... what does this mean?

Its possibly a bad shift solonoid on the trans itself. These trannys' 4T60E have 3 solonoids for shifting 1 for 1st and 2nd, 1 for 2nd to 3rd, and 1 for 3rd to overdrive. Its quite possible that the valve is sticking in the valve body. This can be a somewhat difficult job to do. But the solonoids arent that expensive. I would suggest a trans fluid flush and a new screen/filter and see if that helps. If you take it to a dealer the solonoid/s replacement will be around $800 or more.

Olds 88 tranny fit a Cutlass?

As long as the tags on the trans have the same numbers yes, these transmisssions are electroniclly controlled and there are internal differences even though they may bolt up, there are ID tags on all transmissions sold by GM and installed on the production line.

1995 cutlass supreme transmission

It physically will fit and bolt up,but there are many different ratio, and drive and driven sprocket tooth counts, different final drive ratios, all monitored by the computer with electronic speed sensors. If the trans from the 95 has a different ratio than the 93,the computer will set gear ratio error codes, and possibly put the trans in a failsafe mode, stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear.On the transmission case, down by where the passenger side axle would go in,is a thin metallic tag, maybe 2"x 3",and it has bar codes, and also a series of numbers and letters. The numbers and letters, large cap,are the final drive gear ratio code. They should match on the two transmissions in question.
