My malfunction indicator lamp (check engine light) came on last night after I filled my car up with gas. I have checked the gas cap. The light is on steady.

I had the samething happen to my Jetta. I took it to the dealer and nothing was wrong.
I would think it's safe to drive until Monday when the VW shop opens.

SOURCE: Malfunction indicator lamp is on.

First change the fuel filter its due anyway at 90thou plus. then you have to check sparkplugs, due anyway. then have the fuel pressure checked if it is building 30psi plus. if not the fuel pump may be the culprit.

You need to get the computer scanned. This can be done at Auto Zone or similar parts stores free of charge. More than likely you will just need new spark plugs and/or plug wires but I cannot be certain without the engine code.

yes the gas cap could cause this,also check evap. purge solenoid and hoses for cracks or kinks,the solenoid is on the inner fender and has 2 hoses, one to the intake and one to the canister, the most common cause of this code is a defective purge solenoid.

Check engine light comes on with faulty oxygen sensor, loose gas cap or faulty gas cap. sometimes with low octane fuel as well. fill up with high octane fuel, tighten down the cap and see if it helps.

Common problems that can cause the Check Engine light to come on In older cars, it was typically something like a bad oxygen sensor, faulty mass airflow sensor, failed catalytic converter, worn-out spark plugs, ignition wires, a loose gas cap or a clogged-up EGR system. Newer cars have a lot more electronics, which means, many other things could go wrong too. It's practically impossible to find the problem without at least scanning the vehicle and retrieving the stored code(s). Error code 340 & 457
  • P0340 - Camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction.
  • P0457 - Evaporative emission control system leak detected (fuel filler cap loose/off)

    There is a bulletin #0398 posted on 05/12/2003 for P0457 - Malfunction indicator lamp (mil) illumination with diagnostic trouble codes p0442, p0455, p0456, p0457, p1442 or check fuel cap lamp illuminated with diagnostic trouble code p0457.

I'd suggest checking with your local dealer, as it may be a fix that is covered by the dealer.

2005 Hyundai Tuscon with the check engine light is on. The car is running fine. I had just put gas in it. The gas cap is securely fastened. I took it in for an oil change. The light still plagues me.
When a 'check engine light' (MIL=Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is turned on, there is a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) set/stored in the ECM/PCM (Engine Control Module/Powertrain Control Module). This code identifies which engine management system component/function experienced a malfunction. Once you pull/read this code, you may begin diagnosis.

My yellow 'exhaust system' light is on. Took it in, they replaced the gas cap and all was well- light was out. Two starts later, light is back on. Any ideas?
No such thing as an exhaust system light

That was an EVAP System Light

Was the gas cap tested & was it bad or
you just thru one on & hoped that was it?

Get the OBD2 Codes that you will have from
Malfunction Indicator Lamp being on,& give
them to us,or just it repaired at a local shop

Not the same place you went to
They failed to even test the EVAP
System or you wouldn't be having any issues

Does the indicator look like an engine? If it does you should get the code checked at a local auto parts store or local mechanics shop. Did you recently put gas in the car? If you put gas in the car and dont tighten the fuel cap all the way you can get a check engine light. It will throw an evaporative emisiions code.

I have a 2006 honda accord sedan.There is a orenge color engine shape sign on the left side (right under the head light sign) in the gauge. I need to know what does it mean?
Think this is your malfunction indicator light -indicates a problem with the emission control system. Generally caused by lose or missing gas cap. Make sure when putting gas cap back on that you turn it (tighten) so that it clicks three (3) times.

A malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), commonly referred to as the "Check Engine Light" is an indicator of malfunction of the computerized engine management system. It is found on the instrument console of most automobiles. When illuminated, it is typically either an amber or red color. On vehicles equipped with OBD-II, the light has two stages: steady (indicating a minor fault such as a loose gas cap or failing oxygen sensor) and flashing (indicating a severe fault, that will eventually destroy the catalytic converter, such as a misfire). When the MIL is lit, the engine control unit stores a fault code related to the malfunction, which can be retrieved with a scan tool and used for further diagnosis. The malfunction indicator lamp is usually labeled with the text check engine, service engine soon, check engine soon, or a picture of an engine.
The MIL appeared in the early 80s along with computerized engine controls. Even the earliest systems, such as GM's CCC (Computer Command Carburetor) system had self diagnosis functionality. When the computer detected a fault, it illuminated the MIL. Up until OBDII, on most cars the MIL could output codes, when two pins on the ALDL are jumped, the light would flash the codes, for instance (blink) (pause) (blink) (blink) for code 12. Some manufacturers retained this feature even after OBDII, such as Honda.

Check engine light came on. Code P1456.
Did you change the gas cap with a Honda gas cap? Tighten it at least three clicks?
Also, Honda recommends that you never top off the tank when getting gas (only go to the click-off of the pump; otherwise you can get back flow into the system that will cause the code).
Tightening or replacing the cap will not immediately cause the light to go off; it can take up to three days of driving for the light to reset.
To check if your readiness codes (emission system) are set, turn the ignition to ON (II), without starting the engine. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp will come on for 20 seconds. If it then goes off, the readiness codes are set. If it blinks 5 times, the readiness codes are not set.
You can, of course, try resetting your engine light to see if it will come back on (which it probably will). I believe the procedure is:
Turn off the engine.
Press and hold the Select/Reset knob (odometer) in the instrument panel, then turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
Hold the knob for approximately ten seconds until the indicator resets.

2002 Toyota Echo Check Engine light (malfunction indicator lamp) came on while driving. Gas tank cap was on tight (a loose cap could trigger the light). Fluid levels are proper. I realize this light...
You should get the problem code ran at a shop or auto parts store. My moms 2003 Toyota Echo check engine light came on and it had a slight misfire, I replaced all the sparkplugs about $20 and no check light.
