Question about 1998 Volvo S90

1 Answer

I have a 1998 volvo v70 non turbo engine. In cold weather the headlights and the dash lights wont come on until the engine has warmed up considerably. In really cold weather -30c or so this can take 20-30 minutes. Car starts fine. This doesnt seem right. Any ideas?

I would suspect the headlight switch before anything else. Cycle it on and off and fiddle with the position a little bit when this is happening. See if you can get a flicker or a response of any sort. You didn't say where you are so I don't know if you have DRL's which can complicate things. Put several car warmers in the car so that the interior is warm and see if the problem changes. If it does, that points to a switch or underdash connector problem of some sort. Sorry I can't be more helpful. These can be tough problems and sometime as easy as tightening up one connector (AFTER you find the miserable little ...).

Why does my 1998 v70 have no power until warm

Check your transmission fluid level. When transmission fluid warms up it expands allowing the transmission to work again. Fluid may need changed and the filter also.

Check your idle air control valve. It is mounted on your throttle body.Remove it and turn the key without starting it.If it doesnt move then it needs to be replaced.

I have a volvo v70 d5, an my intercooler has a slight leak. could this affect my performance, as i accelerate hard, engine service urgent light comes up on dash. i have changed my air mass sensor, it made...

Yes, your intercooler is a problem cos it cools down the turbo charger. The turbo is what gives you your extra power, and when it overheats, it loses pressure and thatcauses loss of power.

Any particular quirks to changing the oil in a 1998 V70? I have 160K on it, is it time to go to a different grade of oil?

No different from any other oil change, just reset the oil life on the dash if it has one which i believe it does. The oil grade is 5W-30 on the turbo engines and 10W-30 on the non turbo engines. If you like you can go with the synthetic oil which will give you up to 25,000 miles or 1 year before service, but you do have to replace the oil filter every 5,000 to 7,000 mile and top off the synthetic oil which in the long run be cheaper then changing the oil and filter every 5,000 miles or six months for turbo and 3,000 to 4 months for non turbo engines. Good luck and hope this helps.

What is the size of a Volvo v70 engine?

There are 3 engine choices in the 98 volvo v70. All are 5 cylinders, 1. 2.3L turbo
2. 2.4L MFI DOC
3.2.4L Turbo
#2 is the most common engine for that year and model. If your engine doesn't have a turbo, that's the one u have.
