2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee makes a lot of noise when selecting Reverse. Forward gear okay. Now, reverse doesn't work and it sounds like the transmission is coming apart.

Your automatic transmission has an internal low and indirect clutch. The indirect clutch is what's used when your vehicle is in reverse. You might have a heavy jerking when you put it into gear that feels like vehicle got hit by another or loud rattling or chattering in gears. It very well may be coming apart as you think and soon, so I'd recommend taking it to your local transmission shop to inspect and test it and they can give you a more detailed idea of what it would take to fix it. good luck

I cant get the transmision in gear after i start my car. its a 94 grand cherokee

you didnt state whether you have an automatic or standard transmission...if it's automatic ...there is a switch on the brake pedal that releases the shifter so you can put in gear..check to see if it is broken or has come loose...if your transmission is standard check the fluid in the clutch resevoir...or linkages

HI, It may seem obvious, but sometimes overlooked.... have you checked the oil level, as low oil can cause some strange things to happen! My 96 4 liter would be reluctant to move sometimes, but after I topped it up, it has been fine.

Transmision Shifting Problem

Was the fluid you drained red or black? did it smell like trans or gear oil? With linkage disconnected, could you put trans in park by moving the lever on the side of the unit? Oil condition is likely a separate issue...most "blown" transmissions generally have normal operation of shift, it just dosen't do what you tell it to. two things likely going on are: linkage problem and likely in need of fluid/filter change.
