This condition is directly related to the ignition switch itself. Replace the ignition switch to solve this issue.

'88 Chevy Nova won't start

Won't start how ? When you turn the key to the start position what happens ? Anything ? Does the starter engage an spin the engine ? This would be a crank no start condition which would have me check for spark at a plug wire or hook up a fuel gauge an check for fuel pressure , doing a compression test . Or nothing happens when you turn the key . Which would have me test the battery ,voltage drop test the starter circuit , looking at a wiring diagram to see what all is involved in the starting circuit , relay , park neutral safety switch , PCM/ECM - engine computer .
You need to add more details .

I turned the ignition on inside the car. The starter will not engage, click, or engage. Is there a security device on the car that prevents this or is this a new starter to be replaced?

Should it still start after bypassing the lock and using the igntion control module with a screwdriver?
Your best bet take it to a qualified repair shop !

Ignition problem, turn key but nothing happens?

First thing to do is look at the dash lights when you put the switch in START position. If they blink or dim, you may have a faulty battery or poor connectivity.
Next try jumping the starter. You'll find a starter jumper at almost any auto parts. If you get no result then the problem is with the starter, If the starter turns then the problem is in the starting circuit from the switch to the starter relay.

Starter problems for 88 ford aerostar van 7 passenger. how do i know its the starter or bad connection?

Test your battery and starter by doing a voltage drop test. Put one test lead of your meter on the neg side of your battery, one on the positive. Check voltage. Make sure that you are actually connecting to the battery itself and not the terminal ends. Should read 12.8-13.2. Keeping the neg in the same location move the pos to the terminal end, engage starter, meter should read above 10 volts. Continue testing down the pos wire to the starter, checking voltage, until you find less than 10 volts. If the voltage is good at starter, have someone turn key to the start position, tap starter with a hammer. if starter engages , replace starter.

I have this all the time what i tell the customer is let me remove the alarm system . The activation is in the door lock which always breaks by the way and people get stranded. Do this its the only way I can describe it when the alarm goes off. find the horn it will top section on driver side. Okay found it.take the single wire out it will disable the horn. but you will still have a horn not a alarm horn so we are still safe. now. find the starter there is a single wire that connects to the solenoid splice into that wire route that wire into the driver section and get another wire and attach it to the battery positive terminal all you will need now is a push button starter with the alarm on or off all you need to do is stick the key on if it doesnt crank then use you push button starter. that easy. or easy yet do you know where the starter relay is cross connect it and you defeated the alarm I do this for my customer VW alarm problem there are ways to defeat it and a few know how its cost too much doing the whole door thing and not worth it VW know there alarm sucks and people give up on it

I would lean more towards your ignition switch being bad. Although you could be right I have not seen that problem very often. More often than not its the ignition switch. Good luck.

As soon as I turn the key to the on position, the engine turns over

The problem is either in the mechanism that pushes the rod that activates the ignition switch from the key lock cylinder, or the ignition switch is defective.
