Sounds like the ignition switch has failed and is not turning to the point where it unlocks the steering wheel. remove the ignition lock and test to make sure it is working correctly. if the lock is working properly then the issue is in the steering columns wheel lock mechanism. but 9 times out of 10 it is the ignition switch itself that has failed.
to remove the ignition switch you will need to teardown the steering wheel,, this requires special tools in order to do it safely. ( steering wheel puller, compression tool ) -- if you do not have these tools on hand and need to buy them -- the cost to have a automotive locksmith come out and fix this issue is about the same price as the new tools themselves,, not to mention the time factor -- it will take a locksmith about 20 minutes to fix this problem.

Don't panic. It is in a bind. Try to turn the wheel as your turn the key. Jiggle it...it should free up.

have you tried another key? also if your steering wheel is turned in either direction when key was last removed, you may need to wiggle the steering wheel while trying to turn the key, with newer electronic steering, the column sometimes gets stuck.

2002 pontiac grandprix cant get key out

You probably don't need to replace the switch. This is a fairly common problem with GP's, and it is actually a problem with the solenoid inside the steering column.

What it looks like:

How to fix it:

If you take the bottom cover off of the steering column you can get to it rather easy and remove the solenoid.

1) tilt wheel all the way up and remove tilt wheel lever.... just pull, it comes out rather easy

2) take out screws in bottom steering column cover.... torx bit

3) pull off cover. you will have to tilt it a little to clear the rear clips.

4) remove screw(s) holding in solenoid.... very small nut driver or pliers will do the trick.

5) unplug wires to solenoid and discard solenoid into nearest trash can

6) reverse order to reassemble

Hope this helps, thanks for using FixYa!

Saturn vue ignition key won't turn

It was very likely that the problem turning the key was due to the steering column lock mechanism. Sometimes when you lock the steering wheel, if you the mechanism will bind up, making it difficult to unlock the ignition with the key. Often when this happens, you will be parked on a hill with your wheels agains a curb or some such item. Once you turn the wheel hard to the right (or left), the pressure is released on the locking mechanism, and the key will turn easily. This is a similar situation to what can happen in an automatic if you park on a hill without the parking brake.
try doing this:
pop the off the circle piece around the ignition and the holster cover under the steering wheel.
that ought to work.

Try jerking the steering wheel as your turn the key. Sometimes when you park and the wheel locks up you have to play with it to get it unlocked.

Key will not turn

When going to turn the key and the wheel is locked, try wiggling the steering wheel left and right while turning the key at the same time.

My key is stuck in ignition of my 1997 Pontiac Grandprix. How do I remove it?

Tilt the steering wheel all the way up. Reach inside the hole on the right side underneath the ignition. You will feel a metal button. Push it up, and you'll be able to turn the key all the way back and get it out. Mine does the same thing.
