Could be a blown charge fuse/fusible link or a faulty new alternator. i've gotten 7 bad alternators in a row from 2 different parts suppliers on one vehicle before, so it definitely happens.

Fuses or a fusable link.

Found the problem at the coupler between the alternator and the electrical system. Plug was corroded and grimy. Cleaned and reconnected. Runs like a champ. Thanks to all who helped.

if alternator tested fine the wire on the back of the alternator is not getting a circuit back to the battery to charge it.
You can run a wire from the back of the alternator to the battery positive post and it will charge the battery.
I have done that several times on dodges because of ammeter gauge in dash being burnt out.
With the ammeter gauge burnt out it breaks the circuit from the alternator to the battery and the battery does not get charged.

I put a new tensioner for the belt on my 1998 pontiac firebird v6. now the battery went out and dont know if its the battery or alternator

The best way is to extract the battery and FULLY charge it, then test it. Many parts stores can do this for free. Then, if the battery is okay, pull the alternator and have it bench tested. Likely that one of those steps will show your issue.

After replacing alternator, battery, headlights still do not work

if the battery was leaking acid from the filler caps on the battery it may have been caused by the alternator over charging (faulty voltage regulator) hence blow your light bulbs or blown the fuse check for blown fuses first,if they are OK you may have to replace the bulbs .....hope this helps....cheers

Sounds like your alternator is not doing it's job....if you claim that it's not keeping the battery charged ..........new or used alternator? check voltage output..... if you installed yourself recheck plugs/connections
new or used battery? ...maybe not holding charge?

Hi you should check the alternator, when the charging sistem is defective ,the idle goes up to keep the engine runing ,the battery is not getting charge so eventualy it will go dead.

1995 firebird formula v8 charging system

Once you get the idle issue fixed the charging rate should come up to spec, to be safe take the car to a Kragen auto parts store or other chain store like it, they will test the charging system for free, that will give you peice of mind about the alternator.
