Hi, do you know if the misfire is specific to one cylinder or happens on all of them? Have you had the car scanned for trouble codes to help diagnose? If this is a certain cylinder and only happens at a low RPM, the problem may be a dirty injector. Recommend trying some injector cleaner to see if that will clear it up. Also recommend getting a free scan at your local parts chain to see if the problem is localized or random.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6715318-causes_gasoline_engine_misfires . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or have more questions, please get back to me with engine size info.

Reasons for cylinder misfires

Ford coil on plug systems are multi strike ignition (spark) under 1300 rpm then go to single strike a single cylinder misfire can be created by several things . #1 Test engine compression on a cranking engine compression it should be around 150 lbs but if gauge reads different COMPARE to other cylinders that work fine #2 check engine running compression this will be around 120 lbs then rev over 2000 rpm and check pressure drop again COMPARE to other cylinders that work fine. any drop would indicate valve train problems. #3 All internal engine is fine then external problems are present vacuum leaks and or fuel injection volume is low.

ENGINE MISFIRE

There are few possibilities that can cause engine misfire issues. It can be issue with spark plugs or faulty spark plugs. Also get the compression test done for cylinders. If any of cylinder shows low compression then required, then that particular cylinder will cause misfire.

Also get obd codes scanned, the error code will let you know which cylinder is misfiring or all cylinders are misfiring.

BMW 523 misfiring The car does 170 miles motorway drive in 1 day, twice a week. if at anytime caught in traffic for anylength of time engine fires on 5 cylinders, there is only slight change in engine...

More then likely you need to change the spark plugs because they are fouling out. Thats the cheapest fix that I would do first! Then check coils.

check crankshaft and camshaft sensors. If faulty they may cause misfires, poor fuel mileage, stalls, hard starts. Make sure the ignition coil is ok, including its powers circuit. hopefully this helps!!

1997 Mercury Sable Misfire

they may have done a relative compression test which is done electronically by measuring the RPM drop of each cylinder when the test is running, but not sure anyone but the dealer can do this test. This low compression you mentioned is not good, suggest u run the test yourself, the compression test guage kits are cheap u can buy them on line for about $25 US, also tank added chemicals don't do anything in the short term and noting if the injector is badly clogged, do u understand what I mean about a high pressure factory cleaning? it is quite a different animal.
