This is an almost impossible inquiry.

You can pretty safely group problems into 2 major areas, however. Fuel delivery related, or Ignition related.

I'm sorry to be vague, but this is really an almost impossible question to answer.

If you have some specific symptoms you'd like to discuss, then by all means post the specific areas you are questioning.

We all want to help you, but we have to have something workable to begin with.

If it has the 6 cyl engine, a very common problem on higher mileage engines is the crank sensor located in the top of the transmission at the back of the engine on the drivers side

Engine shut off willnot crank after heating up geting code 34

DTC - 34 MAP Sensor Circuit Error (Signal Low Indicating High Vacuum)

The ECM uses the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor as an indication of engine load. High voltage would indicate low engine vacuum and higher engine load. Low voltage would indicate high engine vacuum and lower engine load. The ECM uses the information from this sensor to help calculate fuel delivery and spark timing.

Fault Code Description:
* 34 - MAP sensor circuit error (signal low indicating high vacuum)

Symptoms:
* Poor engine performance
* Engine running lean (not enough fuel, hard starting, lack of power)

Common Problems:
* GM MAP sensors do not commonly fail
* Due to erratic engine vacuum, other engine performance problems can cause a code 34 to set

Good luck (remember to rate this answer).

What are some common engine problems in a 2000 VW beetle?

The most problematic engine issue is replacement of the timing belt, tension pully and water pump at around 70,000 miles. Failure of the timing belt can damage and possibly ruin the engine. Other common problems are low or sludged oil (if not changed intermittantly), loss of engine coolant, and bad glow plugs.
