Question about 1985 Mitsubishi Mighty Max

Was starting fine, new battery. Now, only hear the click of the starter solenoid. Is there a fuse that could be blown (was starting but had to jump a few times, then would not even jump)? I tried hitting the starter gently with a hammer but to no avail.

No, there are no fuses for the starter.

First, make sure battery terminals are clean, the battery is fully charged and the cables snugly tightened.

Next make sure the cable at the starter end is also tight. (You might want to check this one while you have the battery disconnected) to avoid shorting the "hot" lead.

When this is done, if you still just get a "click" I'd suspect the starter itself.

Well, if you have a ' new battery ' and it is fully charged and you have tried to jump the truck then I would say that it sounds like the starter itself is at fault or the solenoid is bad, since the solenoid and starter are a complete unit - I recommend you replace it and all should be back to normal.

Your new battery is probably discharged.
Here are the things that cause it. And the things that don't.

The voltage regulator controls how much electricity is used to charge the battery and how much is going into the electrical system of the car. The electrical system may has been designed to integrate the voltage regulator into the case of the alternator. If that is the issue, the alternator can be replaced, or if there is a skilled person that does rebuilds in your area, he will know how to change the diodes in the voltage regulating section of the alternator. You can save money this way. If you have a volt meter or a multimeter. Commonly around $25.00 these days, you should get a reading of around 12 volts from the battery when it is charged and the engine is off. If the battery is down, the voltage should still be in that area, but not enough of a kick behind it to do anything but light a small bulb. When the car is started and the voltage regulator is doing it's job you should get at least 13.5 volts DC at the battery terminals.

Many of the symptoms that occur also happen because of poor electrical contact at the battery.
Use Baking soda and water to clean the terminals of the battery of corrosion. And then use a battery cleaning tool for the battery posts and the battery wire clamps that go around the post. Make sure all of the connectors and wiring is sound.

I would then test all of this doing the following steps..

Charge up the battery.

Then connect the system and do the voltage checks. If the Battery is charging properly, the regulator will gradually reduce the charging voltage it is using to charge.

After 15 minutes, shut the engine down and check the battery voltage. and turn on the headlights to see if they are still bright.

If the voltage is at 12 volts DC the battery will live. If you are not getting enough charging voltage, which I believe is the situation then the voltage will constantly be to low at the battery. It will be the battery running the car and the bulbs and other things will go lower and lower.

One very simple test of a charging system is to charge the battery, start the engine, then pull the positive terminal off of the battery. If the engine dies, then the voltage being generated from the alternator is too weak.

the clicking that you hear is coming from the starter relay. sounds like your ignition starter switch or ignition lock cylinder is bad.

1997 pathfinder jump started dead batery with jumper cables however cross wired the cables when attempted to jump now truck doesnt start have i fried the battery? solenoid? starter? Fuses?


Battery and fuses , No problem for the solenoid and starter if the wiring inside the vehicle have not been disturbed . Jus replace the battery or charge it up . and get ur blown up fuses changed ,

My 2000 gmc truck will not start. New starter,


I assume that you mean that the starter will not run. Do you hear the starter solenoid operate (click) when attempting to start? If so, using either a voltmeter or test light, look for 12 volt power at the battery side of the solenoid. If none or it disappears when the starter attempt is made, check the cables from the battery for badly corroded ends. Also, check the grounding cable running from the frame/body over to the engine block for damage. If you hear no click from the solenoid, look for power which should appear at the small terminal of the solenoid when starting. If you get power, replace the solenoid. If no power, then look for a blown fuse, bad relay, bad ignition switch, or any damaged wiring. Make sure the new battery is fully charged. Hope some of this helps!

My gauges work but it wont turn over i dont hear any noise from the starter


Three possibilities I think:
First is weak battery. There may be enough juice to light the gauges but it takes power to turn an engine.

Second, bad solenoid. The solenoid is a relay which closes the high current circuit that delivers the cranking power to the starter motor. If you hear clicking in the engine compartment (not the starter) when you turn the ignition switch on it is probably the solenoid engaging and disengaging. However if the battery is weak it won't turn the starter motor. If the solenoid is clicking look at the battery first. The solenoid could be bad but the clicking indicates it's trying to work and there just may not be enough juice to turn over the engine.

Third possibility is the starter motor itself is dead. You have to answer some questions for yourself. Is this an old,neglected car or one that has been taken care of? I would be looking at battery. Can you jump start it? If yes then weak battery is the likely problem. If the car and battery are relatively new and in good condition you should suspect the charging system, that is, the alternator. Did this happen all of a sudden on a car that was running fine recently or has the car been sitting idle for weeks/months.Eliminate the easy stuff.
Clean battery terminals?
Good battery connections and ground?
Try jump start - if yes then follow up battery/charging system. If no start then try to hear for solenoid clicking. If jump start does nothing -figure the solenoid first. If it sounds like solenoid is kicking in but engine does not turn then the starter is looking a little guilty. Jump starting will answer a lot of questions. If the car is really dead then the car that is jumping may have to be connected and revved up a couple minutes to juice up the dead battery enough to turn the starter over. If it turns over a little during the jump start but just barely then you should figure your battery is bad.

starter wont click because there's not enough "juice" to turn it over. this isnt because of the battery as you have just replaced it. it is due to a bad alternator recharging the battery as you drive. if it were only a fuse it would be the solenoid in the starter. but if it had started after you installed the battery then its not the solenoid. solution: buy a refurbished alternator and

When you turn the ignition key to start the car what happens? Do you hear a click form the engine compartment. If you do not hear a click, that means the starter solenoid is not working. If the starter solenoid does not energize that there is no voltage applied to the starter. So..... even though the starter has been checked out as good, it cannot work if the starter solenoid doesn't work.
