Once upon a time, you would routinely rebuild starters, generators, etc.

Nowadays, I doubt you can find the parts to do so at chain auto parts stores.

You'll probably be ahead of the game to just put on another one.

Not trying to be stupid I know nothing about electrical what are the brush terminals


On motors/generators (starter, alternator, etc,) the brushes make the connection to the rotating armature. You can read up a little on motors and generators. Bottom line is, the brush terminals provide the access point for the outside world - to electrical leads. If you think of an electric drill for something simple...power is applied to the brush terminals, the brushes connect that power to the multiple rotor points as it spins. Slightly different system with DC power but the brushes serve same basic function - providing an electrical contact to something rotating. You may be dealing with a starter or alternator where faulty (worn) brushes or faulty brush terminal wiring is stopping power from getting to the starter, or from the alternator. Does that help at all?

1988 Chevy suburban Starter some times makes a loud grinding sound when trying to start the truck


The brushes on the starter are worn where you hear the gringing. The grinding comes from the worn areas trying to turn over the fly wheel. Or the fly wheel teeth are doing the opposite to the starter. Hope this helps

Truck wont start or turn over tap the center of starter and it turns over ?replaced the cylinoid


OK the starter has bushings in either end of the starter which the armature rides in, if those bearings are worn out the armature will drag on the fields and wont start the starter will need to be replaced

I have a 2004 Kia Rio and most of the time it works just fine, but every now and then the car won't start at all. I turn the key and all the electrical components come on just fine (lights, radio, etc) but...


Does sound like the starter still. This is what I call a lottery start it is pot luck if the car starts each morning. The motor occasionally refuses to start to turn first time and has a defined rhythmic pulse when turning over - this is due to either burnt out armature coil or the contact face of the armature has become badly pitted or has worn off centre causing the brushes to lose contact.

? - replace brushes and ensure brush passages allow free movement

? - replace/ exchange the starter motor as armature contact area and windings are beyond repair.

If is just worn brushes another check is hit the outside of the starter motor whilst at the same time trying to start the car. If as you hit it the starter jumps into life and does its job then this is sign of worn brushes. There is no harm in taking the motor and starter solenoid out for a strip down and full inspection and possible clean up. To eliminate from the possibilities is a step forward.

Your starter brushes probably are too short(worn down) to make good contact to the starter armature. If you tap on the starter and it works right away it is worn brushes. Either replace the brushes or replace the starter.

All connections are good as far as i can see...when i try to start it the starter kinda clicks like its not getting enough juice or battery is dead....so i put jumper cables on it also and same...


Chances are the brushes inside the starter are worn. The way a starter is wired internally, the solenoid pull in winding is taken out of service if the brushes are worn to prevent internal damage to the starter. Have the starter checked by a qualified person.

The starter is located on the backside of the engine (firewall side) on the drivers side, from symptom described it sounds like a bad starter drive. The starter needs to be removed, disassembled and the drive replaced. I have found that banging the starter usually only works when the starter has very worn brushes that builds a pile of carbon in the bottom of the starter causing a short and banging the starter sometimes disrupts that unwanted ground path or the brushes are so worn they don't contact the armature properly to make good contact after the armature stops spinning from it's last start. Some times the shock of banging the starter will shift the brushes enough to allow it to start the car.

My 2005 ford focus won;t start. Won't click or anything. Lots of power to the accessories though. drove to the store and back: normal went out 5 min later to go again: nothing. car is in park....


If the brushes in the starter are worn out then the solenoid on the starter can't work.It needs to go to ground through the brushes to engage,i suggest that you replace the brushes in the starter.If i'm wrong then you need a starter solenoid switch,the one on the starter.

Starter sometimes does not ingage


Could be several things. As this is a 1991 car you are probably going to need a new starter. The brushes on the starter motor are probably worn out. A weak battery is also the probable cause for not engaging or the starter is just worn out. If you hear a clicking sound but the starter won't do anyting then its the battery. If the starter tries to engage but wont turn the engine over then you'll need a new starter.

Either there isn't a good enough craking amps in battery, or the starter solenoid could be loosing it's magneticity.
