If the noise is there when the vehicle is just idling, it could possibly be the belt tensioner going bad. If the tensioner is going bad it will allow the belt to basically skip causing noise. Also check out the idler pulley to make sure it's not a bearing noise. Good luck.

Humming is usually caused by a wheel bearing. Try grabbing each tire and shaking it back and forth. If you hear any kind of clicking or movement, the bearing will need to be replaced.

2000 Saturn sl1 has loud engine noise which seems to be either the (dead) a/c unit, something else on the serpentine belt (very few miles on it), or it could be the timing belt (which I read is an issue...

the best way to determine the cause of the noise is to remove the drive belt and start the engine for a few minutes. if it is in the drive belt components then the noise will cease. if not then the noise will remain.

Metal on metal sound

It could be the low brake pad indicators making the noise, indicating that the pads need to be replaced soon before damage to the rotors occurs. Have your brake's inspected and may have to replace the brake pads and rotors. You can save some money by turning the brake rotors, but there not to expansive and you might as well replace them.

Good luck and thank you for using fixya

Starter Voltage Drop If this doesn't find a problem ,then check the control side . Ignition switch , when it won't start check for Battery voltage at the connection at the starter solenoid "S" terminal .

this is caused by burnt starter solenoid contacts, U can either replace the starter solenoid contacts (about $15) or u can replace the entire starter.
