Question about 1996 Mitsubishi Mirage

1 Answer

My 1996 Mitsubishi Mirage LS 2-door coupe. 1.2l Stick shift Standard hesitates in all gears. If i press the gas to much it starts to smell like something is burning. My transmission works cause i can eventually get up to speed to get on freeway. I have to press the gas light enough for it to catch gear but if i press the gas to much the engine rebs up and i start seeing and smelling smoke. I thought it was my transmission and i kept adding gear oil. But there is no way to tell if I put to much without a gear oil stick. and I know my oil is leaking slowly from the bottom pan or side of engine so i can easily check the oil stick and add oil. Am i'm loosing power from engine or is it my transmission having to much fluid that it cant catch the gear no matter how much gas or what?

Your clutch is slipping. If you hold your brakes, can you release the clutch without the engine killing? Do you smell the burning at this time? Then you need to replace your clutch. Do it soon before it damages the flywheel.

SOURCE: atomatic transmission won't only has second gear

Sounds like you have a solonoid out in your transmission. No simple fix for this. You will more than likely have to drop the transmission to replace solonoid.

I have a 95 Mitsubishi Mirage, 1.8, manual transmission, distributor driven. 179k miles. Just started today, shudder after shifting in all gears, levels out after a moment, but seems to shudder stil

I would be checking the engine mounts as the shudder is when the engine is bouncing around under load
it it has a cable operated clutch, the problem could be that as the engine is allowed to move , it is affecting the operation of the pressure plate
it may be true that the distributor may have a problem but in this case , not electrical
distributor problems are limited ,to starting, missing, irregular timing but not what you describe

Can't change gear and very bad smell on 1988 mitsubishi mirage

The sounds like the cluch went bad. the smell and the reason you cant shift gears is due to the clutch. the clutch is burning and thats the smell, when the clutch gets low and slips it smells and sometimes it just blows apart due to wear. have the clutch checked and you will find it needs replacing. hope this is helpful have a good day.

I have a 2001 mitsubishi mirage with 1.8l engine. transmission won't shift out of second gear. Go's in reverse but won't go forward until in second and won't shift out of second gear.

Is this an automatic trans?Does this mean that it just revs in 1st or drive unti it goes into 2nd?Shifts are determined by having sufficient trans fluid in.That the internal valve body is functioning, that external shift solenoids are working, and that the speed sensor on the trans as well as the TPS on the throttle body are working correctly.apart from this they do wear out internal parts and then do these types of things.
Check the transmission fluid level while idling in park with the handbrake on.also if the fluid smells burnt and/or looks dark,it is time for a rebuild.Could you supply some more info, what was the trans like on last drive prior to fault, did it just start up and do this or did it begin while driving?
