Question about 2008 Ford F 250 Super Duty 4WD

2 Answers

I have a 2008 f250 with the 6.4L motor. It snowed 14 inches here and I used the 4wd in the deep stuff. Now I notice a knocking noise when 4wd is engaged. It is a fast knock, like maybe driveline too fast for the wheel, I think but not sure. Funny thing is my dads truck (same make year and model) started the same thing at the same time. Job 1 trucks. Any ideas?

Depending on your mileage and In-service date both of your trucks may be covered by Warranty. It sounds like a Powertrain issue. The CV joints and the U-joints would each make a rapid knocking noise when turning.

I would not mess with it myself, if the repairs would be done for free. Just call the Dealer and ask about your coverage and if he wants to tow them in or let them break down on the way to the Dealership.

Since the Dealer is closed today you may find more info on the Web. The Ford forums for trucks, and 4x4 forums may be a good source of info. As you both have identical problems, there may be a history in the NTHSA site. I am sure the prospect of Warranty repairs will be a beneficial consideration.

I hope you have been helped by my Solution.

Probably the snow is to deep for the auto hubs. [might have knocked conection from inside wheel.]Engage hubs manually on front wheels.

2008 Jeep Compass is stuck in 4 Wheel Drive with exclamation point by the 4 WD indicator...

If you are driving on the highway in 4wd drive the poise may be from the tyres trying to slip and equalise the drive line torque that is building up . Rule of thumb for all 4 wd vehicles is to restrict 4wd to loose surfaces (gravel-snow-ice -grass- mud --any surface that allows the tyres to slip) to relieve the torque wind up.

2001 Jeep grand cherokee motor knock 4.7 motor

First, if the noise is from the upper part of the engine and is more of a tapping than a knock, likely you have a problem in the valvetrain, most often a bad lifter or worn rocker arm. If the noise is low, deep inside, the noise is from a bearing. This is generally accompanied by lower than normal oil pressure. Regardless of the underlying cause, correcting the cause will not stop the knock. To do that correctly, the engine needs to be removed and all crankshaft bearings and the crankshaft itself need to be replaced (crank can sometimes be "undercut" and thicker bearing shells can be used depending upon the amount of wear.) If caught very early, sometimes only one bearing can be replaced in-car, but in 99% of all cases I have ever seen, most will fail again, sometimes more severely if done this way.

not sure what you are concerned about here, probably fuel economy i'm guessing? you might consider purchasing a "scangauge II" which will give you a digital readout of about every sensor on your truck, including fuel consumption, ignition timing, knock ******, MAP, intatke temp, trans temp, etc.

it also reads/resets codes, i have found it to be a great diagnosis gauge/tool
