Question about 2002 Toyota Tacoma

1 Answer

I tried to start my tacoma this morning but the key would not turn. I tried over and over with two different keys and neither worked. I also tried turning the wheel wile turning the key still no luck. My room mate had a key I had given him a wile back and his key worked this left me confused. Both of my doors also give me problems at times not wanting to open with my key's. I am afraid I will get stranded is the problem my key or the starter?

It's a problem w/your key(s) make a copy of the one your roomate has. Sounds like yours are worn down

Even his key was not smooth when turning, I think it may give out soon as well. Should I take it to the dealership and have them make me a new one that works like new? Can they do that?

That's an option but I'm sure they try to sell you a new ignition switch (which is probably your best option) but you can probably find someone other that the dealer to do that. Dealers can get expensive on both parts

Try putting the key in the driver door lock and turning from lock to unlock. That should dissable the factory alarm system. You may have to do it a few times before it works.

Cant turn my alarm off and truck wont start

You need to use the main regular key. Not keyless remote... LOCK THE VECHELE DRIVER DOOR WITH KEY, THEN UNLOCK DRIVER DOOR WITH KEY. Once you have done this place key in ignition try to start car, and security problem should be resolved.

Is the theft light flashing while your trying to start it? Try a different key, maybe the theft unit in the key got damaged. Has to be one that came with the car. Also if someone has a code scanner, you will see a code like p1260 theft detected if it can read your key.

I'm not sure that is possible without having your key in your ignition. When reprogramming keys or transmitters they would all have to be reprogrammed to work with your vehicle at the same time so as long as your current keys and transmitters work I'm pretty sure that this incident is pure fluke!

Turn key to start and nothing

Not if you left your headlights on all night and completely drained the battery. if it is dead, try to jump it, if you get some sort of power with the jumpers attached, go buy a new battery.

My 96 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 with a 3400 engine has been not starting.

sounds like the fuel pump as failed, get a fuel pressure test gauge from Kragen or Autozone (about $15) and test the pressure when you turn the key on it should be at 45 PSI instantly.

Tacoma won't start, or shift out of park.

Try putting foot on brake, or is key in ignition, also over-ride button by shifter. Auto's have safety micro switches in these places so not to have car in drive and start, "extremely dangerous" Try this first easily missed. lol
