Question about 2001 Ford Expedition

3 Answers

I got in my 2001 Expedition, started it up and the oil pressure light came on. The guage was down to 0. I stopped it and started it again. The guage press. went up and then slowly dropped at first and then quickly to 0 and the light came on. It did this 2 more times. What could be wrong?

Oil pump gears inside the lower engine, or electrical. 1st make sure its full on oil, then sheck it with another pressure guage to confirm its not actuall pressure.

1) you could have a bad oil pressure switch 2) oil pump could've gone bad
was it knocking or making noise? If not, I'd be suspect of oil pressure switch. It does have oil right? (sorry had to ask)

Oil pressure drops to 0 then goes back up

Definitely needs resolving.
Since both light and guage drop occur, problem would appear to be with oil pump or oil delivery rather than simply a bad guage.
You could check to see if there is a common sender that may be defective.
It is also possible that the oil pump pickup screen has an obstruction.
I'd be looking at the recent history.
Has ANYTHING been done to the vehicle that might lead to this problem
Make, model, milage, maintenance history..........
All will help to track down the problem.

I'm trying to locate the oil sending unit on a 2001 plymouth neon

How many miles on the car? I recommend hooking up a direct reading oil pressure guage. Oil level is not the only factor on oil pressure. As an engine ages, clearances and bearings wear and the pressure falls. Using too thin oil can result in low pressure.

The oil pressure guage drops to no pressure and the light comes on, then it will go back up for a minute and then drop back down.

I don't know if you have done this yet or not, but have you checked the oil level? If so and it is where it is supposed to be, it may be the pump.

The oil pressure guage on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee is registering 0. My oil was just changed and I don't see any indication of oil leaking anywhere. Could it be the sensor?

First off I wouldnt drive your car until you make sure that you have indeed oil pressure and that the gauge is a false reading, driving your car if in fact it has no oil pressure will severly damage your engine, but firstly i would check the oil pressure switch its located on the passenger side of the engine right back from the oil filter make sure the connector is clean and free from oil and corrosion if the connector appears to be in good shape take a paper clip and insert it between the 2 terminals inside the connector your oil pressure gauge should peak at 80 PSI that tells you that your gauge and all related wiring are good and in working condition, secondly remove the oil pressure switch and hook an manual oil pressure gauge up to you engine and start the engine the guage should have a oil pressure reading anywhere from 30 PSI to 55PSI depending on engine temperature if theres oil pressure on your manual gauge replace the oil pressure switch with a new unit, if you still have 0 PSI on your gauge then stop your engine immediatly and start looking at your oil pump and lubricating system for a problem.

1989 F150 351 oil pressure guage starting dropping to 0 suddenly and engine light comes one. When I rev the engine it goes back to normal but a soon as the rpms drop the needle goes all the way to the left...

Hi:
Usually your oil light doesnt come on unless you have less than 10 lbs of oil pressure. You either have a bad oil pressure sending unit, or your engines oil pump is bad. The only way to verify your engines oil pressure is to buy a direct reading pressure guage and install it on your truck, or have a mechanic check your engine oil pressure. Eitherway, you need to do something soon, because the long term effects of running with low oil pressure will ruin your truck engine.

Check gages light turns on and doesn't go off. Already had the oil changed, the oil pressure needle keeps marking 0. It had the same problem once but I changed the oil and kept working fine; then about 2...

At this point I would strongly suggest that you have your mechanic hook a mechanical oil pressure guage to the engine and make absolutlely sure that the pressure is up to manufacturers standards. It may simply be a failing oil pressure sending unit, but, until you know, it could turn out a lot more expensive! Thank you, Dana

I HAVE SAME PROBLEM

Make sure you are using a genuine Ford oil filter. The Ford filter has pressure valves in it to keep the oil where it belongs. Make sure you are using the proper weight of oil.

If the oil and filter are proper, it sounds like the oil pump pickup is clogged or there is excessive play in the crank bearings. The engine is running dry on oil because it is not pumping up until the oil is circulating completely through the engine.
