Could be a lot of different things, but I believe the first thing I'd take a look at is the crankshaft position sensor.

Best bet is to go to your local auto supply parts store and purchase a vehicle specific repair manual. It should provide step-by-step instruction on how to R & R the Crankshaft Position Sensor.

there are 50 causes for stalls.
or 4 basics.
1: lost DC 12v power to the EFI system. (voltmeter time)
2: lost compression , hot.? (gauge time)
3: lost spark, (timing light and spark tests )
4: bad fueling, too much or too little ( huge list of causes)
we do this in this order, if you get to #4 ask. for help.

guessing will be costly.
do the tests and save a bundle.

Have 1987 Jeep Cherokee. No spark at the coil and it is a new coil.


Appartently alot of ppl are having this problem; I currently fixing the same problem; I have narrowed it down to a few things; but what was you doing when the jeep shut off? and did it ever start back up later?

Where is the thermostat valve located on my 1987 jeep cherokee 4x4 ?


Follow your top rad hose back to engine. Should be a housing with usually 2 bolts attaching it to engine, thermostat should be behind it.
You didn't say what engine, but this is usually a pretty good bet.

The 1987-90 Jeep Cherokee with the Renix Eletronic Engine controls take somewhere between 4-7 revolutions before the computer has enough information to get the engine started.

If it takes longe rthan that, it may be time for a full tune-up:
Distibutor Cap and rotor
Spark plugs
Spark Plug wires
Fuel filter
Air filter
and possibly an oxygen sensor

Where is the gas leaking from? To clear a flooded engine, keep your foot all the way down on the gas pedal while you try to start the car. As it starts keep holding until it sounds like it's smothing out then slowly release. You can also change the spark plugs if that does not work.
