Are you sure it is a clicking noise the 2.2 engine is bad for the ac compressor clutch going bad and making a metal to metal rubbing noise. the way to check this is while the car is running turn on the air conditioner and see if the noise stops if so all it needs if the ac compressor changed or bypassed till the spring. hope this helps.

2003 pontiac sunfire makes clanking sound from engine, sounds like valves? lifters make more of a ticking sound...right?

valves do not normally make a sound unless the seat insert is loose in the head. This will be revealed by a compression test. I suspect that a clanking sound is much lower in the engine --like a big end failure.

2001 pontiac sunfire hard cold start

Could be a faulty idle air control valve. The computer controls idle speed by how much air gets into the intake thru the valve.
I am assuming the check engine light is not on.

Blowing oil out of the exauhst any ideas ? it is a 2003 sunfire 2.2l

Sounds like your Piston Valve Rings are bad, I would recommend going to a mechanics shop that you can trust. Check the Better Business Beauro {BBB} for your area and make sure you look at customer reviews before making a decision.

It might could also be a busted head gasket leaking into your manifold, but if that were the case the vehicle would be running hot. either way I would suggest taking it to a certified mechanic, unless you have a brother in law!

2000 pontiac sunfire replaced head gasket now it still wont start, it just backfires

It sounds like a timing issue. Make sure the cam shafts and timing belt are installed correctly. Hopefully you have not belt any valves while trying to start it. Good luck.

2001 Sunfire 2.2L, Car started Noise seems to coming from top of Eng . Lifters is my guess, is there anything that would make similar noise, or that I should be checking, How can I be sure it is lifters?

You make have a bad or sticking lifter, remove the valve cover and have someone tap the key, make sure to disconnect the ignition coil to avoid the engine from starting, as they tap the key you will look for the valve to close, a good way is to watch the one next to it open, when the valve is open then you will know the other is closed as there are two valves per cylinder. with the valve closed grab rocker arm and see if theres a lot of play in the direction it moves if it does then look at rocker and push rod and if those are good then you have a bad lifter. if this engine use an overhead cam then there will be no rocker arms or push rods you will need to look for any worn lobes on cam, a stethiscope would be a good tool. start engine with cover off and listen to each cylinder and pin point noise, this will get a little messy as oil will be splashing out a little but its the best way to locate the noise. poor oil flow would cause this also or a loose timing chain. i would start at the top first and look inside cover. good day.

My 2001 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L has a rapid clicking and an intake manifold backfires when trying to start. Had starter tested and cleaned all connections, at a total loss. Any suggestions?

it sounds like your timing tensioner has failed and the timing is off ! STOP RIGHT NOW, DO NOT CRANK MOTOR OVER !!!!!!!!!!! When the timing goes and the motor turns over there are valves in the open position on the cylinder head which in sense are not suppose to be open and when the car turns over the pistons go up and down and when they come up and the valve is open (exhaust valve) then the piston makes contact with the valve causing it to break and or bend. remove the timing chain cover and inspect this before you do any more. If this is the failure then you need to replace, and then time the motor and check for compression in all cylinders. I hope there is no further damage but plan on doing a valve replace on cylinder head. I"m sorry, you would think the damn auto industry would help us owners out with this so all this damage would not happen when these timing issues fail as often as they do. Best of luck

Pontiac sunfire valve noise

If it's a ticking noise that speeds up with the speed of the engine, it's a worn valve lifter.
You can try tightening it down by taking the valve cover off and tightening the bolt on the rocker arm, but don't tighten it too much, you will end up with other problems.
