Question about 1996 Mazda 626

Clutch pedal goes to floor and will not come up on its own as normal. Clutch does not engage. Cannot shift gears. Happened suddenly with no leading indicators noticed, except a possible change in sounds just before loss had me looking for an open window. Possibly unrelated: there is a leaking hydraulic pressure hose which runs under the battery on the driver side, and power steering reservoir was depleted. No problems with steering or brakes. Suggestions? 1996 Mazda 626 2.0L

Check the fluid level of the clutch resovoir, try bleeding the system out and look for visable leaks.the line you need to look for should go into the side of the transmission, and lead up to a small round resovoir.

    Thanks, Brad. That was indeed the problem. I replaced the hose and refilled and bled the system. After that, no more issues.

that is normal if the gear synchro dogs ( teeth) are in line in the box
problems concerning a clutch are
slashing gears when trying to engage first or reverse with the pedal to the floor ---needs bleeding
slipping when the clutch pedal is released--- slipping clutch from the pressure not being released ---problem in master cylinder
reverse gear is the only gear not synchronised so even with the clutch depressed it is possible sometimes that it will not go into gear unless you let the clutch up to move the gears in the box then attempt to re-engage reverse

A clutch pedal normally does go all the way to the floor. If you can shift gear without a crunch, it is disengaging OK.

The loss of power could mean the clutch plate is worn and is slipping when engaged. There is a crude test for this. Start the engine and idle it. Apply the footbrake firmly, depress the clutch and put the gearbox in 3rd. Let the clutch out slowly. If the engine does not immediately stall, the clutch needs replacing.

If the clutch is correctly adjusted, it will start to engage when releasing the clutch pedal at 1 in. off of the floor. When in Heavy traffic shift trans to neutral while at a stop, take your foot off of the clutch pedal to avoid overheating the release bearing

It jump because the clutch disc itself is good, but the clutch is not engaging-the pedal is not making the clutch engage. When it does, then you can shift without grinding, then you can shift period. Clutch pedal operates a cable or it operates a hydraulic system-they both, which ever one you have, move the clutch fork on the transmission bell housing just a bit to cause the clutch to disengage the transmission from the engine's flywheel...so you can shift, see, easy, smooth shifts, no problem, no grinding. Your clutch itself is okay, the pedal is just not operating it.

Clutch pedal travel


Your pedal height may be adjustable by a stopper bolt at top of pedal. You would have to check the specification for your car. Most important that the pedal has about a half inch free travel before clutch begins to engage. You need that free play to ensure the release bearing (the throw-out bearing) is not touching the fingers on the pressure plate when not engaged. If it always is touching, it will be rolling around constantly and will go out prematurely.
Your new clutch will allow gear engagement sooner as the clutch pedal is released. I mean gears will engage just as pedal is lifting off from floor. You should notice that difference-the old clutch would have taken longer pedal travel from floor before releasing.

Clutch will not engage when it was engaging perfectly to begin with.


Your car has a hydraulic clutch release system, it is defective, either the master or slave cylinder is leaking or pulling in air and this causes the clutch pedal to go to the floor.

If hydraulic actuated mechanism, loss of fluid, defective master cylinder or slave cylinder at the clutch. Missing pin or other part between slave cylinder and clutch arm. Loose or broken slave cylinder mounting. Missing pin or broken part between pedal and master cylinder. If mechanical linkage, look for broken components or missing pins at moving joints. If you tried to shift into gear with engine running, you may have damaged the transmission gears.

I found that having a wood stick on the clutch pedal down to the floor all night (the other end of the stick held by the seat. oh yeah !!! ) would help to ease shifting for the first hour the next morning, then it would come back stiff and hard to engage in gear.

Could be the clutch is wearing down.If it's in ALL gears,it is likely the clutch.If i remember correctly,your car has a hydraulically activated clutch.If this is the case,under the dash,where the clutch pedal attaches to the clutch master cylinder,there is a jam nut,either 12mm or 14 mm wrench,loosen the jamnut,and spin the threded rod in,towards the clutch pedal,and away from the firewall.This should make your clutch pedal engagement point closer to the floor,and easier to shift.
