Question about 1997 Honda Odyssey

1 Answer

Where is the starter located on a '97 Odessey? I looked under the car and it is not quickly visible. Surely I don't have to remove the transmission to get to the starter, do I?

Honda likes to put the starter on most of their vehicles under the throttle body. The starter will connect to the transmission. You don;t have to pull the tranny to remove the starter. It will be located on the upper housing to the tranny case. Trying to explain, sorry. It will be half way up your engine block, on the engine side, facing the transmission, since it turns the fly-wheel in the transmission. Hope this helps, hard to explain sometimes

Where is the starter at on 97 Hyundai at

What is the Hyunday model? The flywheel is located inside the transmission housing outside the car motor. The starter is most likely located in lower front of the motor under the exhaust manifold and the gear end enters the transmission. Do a search on on Google with terms "1997 Hyunday (model) starter motor" and you should find pictures or even videos on the subject. Ex: "howto replace starter on 1997 Hyunday (model). Good luck!

I just need some instructin on how to get to starter without ripping engine apart what exactly needs to be removed to get to starter to replace

The following is generic for all vehicles.

The starter motor is typically located near the bottom of the engine where it joins the transmission.Once you find the starter, remove one or both of the cables from the battery before doing anything else. You don't want to mess around with live high-current wires. The starter is easier to work on if the car is up on stands (you'll have to slide underneath to get at it.), but disconnect the battery before you jack up the car. All of the usual safety precautions about putting the car up on stands apply!

Next, note exactly where the wires go on the starter solenoid (part of the starter assembly). If necessary, label each wire with tape. Now, remove the wires and put the nuts back on the wire terminals (it isn't necessary to tighten them; you just don't want to lose them). The next step is to remove the bolts securing the starter assembly to the engine block. Pull the starter out of the hole in the transmission flywheel cover. If you are going to keep and re-use the solenoid, you can remove this from the starter on a workbench. While you are under the car, look for the engine block ground wire (sometimes a braided cable with no insulation. It is often connected near the starter. Inspect it to make sure the connection is in good condition and the cable is not frayed.

Turn the key, all I hear is one click. Battery is good.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

If that's the case then the problem will surely be on the starter itself. If the starter is faulty it tends to click once or just rapidly clicks with insufficient power to kick the flywheel. If that's the case the starter will surely need replacement. It will be located at the back of the transmission with one cable going to the positive battery connector which needs to be removed.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

the starter should be visible from underneath it may be on the back side of the engine above the transmission, when you find it, check for power on the small wire on starter while the key is in the start position, if you have power starter is bad
