TAKE THE BELT OFF, TURN THE PULLEYS BY HAND. IF THEY ALL TURN FREE, UNPLUG THE AIR CONDITIONER CLUTCH/PULLEY . PUT THE BELT ON, CHECK FOR SQUEALING. THE BOTTOM PULLEY IS THE CRANKSHAFT. IT WILL NOT TURN BY HAND

Does the Alternator turn freely with the belt removed? if not the bearings that the Alternator shaft runs in are frozen up and the Alternator will need to be replaced, also make sure all the other pulleys turn freely while you doing the job.

What would cause black soot /smoke around alternator on 04 pacifica and then it not start with fully charged battery?

The battery gives the voltage necessary to start the vehicle, then after it is started the alternator will spin off the accessory belt and recharge the battery for the next startup.If your alternator was bad the vehicle would start but turn off shortly after driving a few miles. After making sure the battery is charge, clean the battery terminals and make sure they're tightly connected to the battery. If the engine doesnt turn over, it may be your starter. The alternator on the Pacificas arent really hard to take off since theyre located on the top,so if you're second guessing its the alternator, then just release the belt tensioner pulley and loosen the alternator bolts and have it tested at your local auto parts store. Good luck

I'M GOING TO GUESS (ONE MAIN BELT)...SERPENTINE, AND THE TENSIONER IDLER PULLEY IS BINDING...NOT ENOUGH TO SMOKE THE BELT, BUT TO MUCH PRELOAD ON THE ALTERNATOR BURNING UP BEARINGS

I have a '99 Ford F150 and the main belt snapped. I was starting the truck up this morning and it started squealing and shortly after smoking. I cut it off and looked under the hood and the belt then...

It would appear that some device that is belt driven is stalled. Find the pulley that doesn't want to turn. If they all turn (except the crank shaft of course) replace the belt and see what happens. If you do find a pulley that will not turn, you will have to repair what ever it it --- water pump - alternator- A/C - air pump - power steering or other device.

Squeaky belt and battery light on now

+++ been told to fix blue smoke...piston rings gone .

Piston rings, valve seals are a good guess for cause of blue smoke. Engin oil additives for high-mileage engines can help the blue smoke problem... Pep Boys and the like -- many different products -- just make sure it's for stopping smoke, not cleaning engines...

+++ squealin....fan belt gone.

Has the alternator belt been tightened? If not, this could be causing both symptoms: dead battery & squealing

+++ battery light on...alternator gone.

Again, this could just be a loose belt, and most likely is the problem...

Daughter's 1999 Jetta; smelled burnt rubber when leaving work last week. Car ran fine. Yesterday, started squealing (sounded like belt slipping) when started. Later in day, she turned car off and sat with...

It sounds like the alternator belt or the alternator is going bad. The squealing sound was probably the alternator belt. the alternator belt might need to get tightened or replaced or you may need a new alternator. The alternator keeps the battery charged. When the alternator goes bad the battery can not be recharged. You also should keep the power steering fluid up to par or the power steering will go bad on you.

Over-heating after squealing. could it be a broken alternator bel

Your serpentine belt broke. Don't drive the car until it's replaced. You will totally drain your battery and possibly blow the enging because the coolant isn't being pumped through.

Squealing belt

Causes of problem like yours can be:
  1. the alignment of the pulley of your alternator and the alignment of your engine's pulley. you may check it by just looking at it, be sure they are precisely parallel with each other.
  2. The size of the opening of your pulleys, you try to measure it using a caliper, they should have the same mouth size
  3. loose pulleys causing wiggle
  4. rusts on your pulleys
Hope I helped you
