First, your engine has to be cool to start the procedure. 1. open cap of expansion pack 2. turn ignition on 3. set heater at maximum temperature 4. set fan to low 5. fill expansion pack as needed. 6. there is a bleeder screw on the expansion pack, unscrew till coolant starts coming out, it let's the air out. 7. refill as needed. 8. let engine cool down and re-check. repeat all steps if necessary

Start car, remove black plastic screw by filler cap/top hose. Loosen just enough to let air out then you'll see some anti freeze seep out then tighten and you done.

First, bleed only one radiator at a time. Remember the system is a closed loop so you will eventually get all the air out and hit water. If this is the first time the furnace has been used this year you could have quite a lot of air built up and it can take a long time to fully bleed the system. If you open two radiators and one is much colder than the other you can actually suck air into the circuit so open only one at a time. The air can also move around as you bleed the system so you may need to bleed it more than once.

Most likely you have air trapped in your engine, particularly in the heater loop. You need to properly bleed the air out of your radiator cooling system. The hot and cold blasts of air coming from first hot water followed by air.
Read up on how to bleed air out of your radiator system. Some systems are very difficult to bleed.
If after doing a good bleed of the radiator system the problem returns, you may have a bad head gasket or other leak in your cooling system which is injecting air into the cooling system (radiator/water cooling system).

Most systems are self bleeding but with the car on a slight incline the driveway turn heater on start car and run with the radiator cap off (cold engine) level of water in radiator should be down about 2-3 inches will warming up it will expand then drop again after hot top off system place cap on done .with Degas bottles (divorced radiator cap) it has a hose that runs from radiator to tank this bleeds the air out. heater should be hot after done.

I have a 98 pontiac transport I have new lower intake. Gaskets,water pump,t-stat new radiator but I still only have air Coming from the bleed screw and it over heats.there's no water in my oil,what...


just keep bleeding the air out. unless you have a blown head gasket or cracked head, there is no way for the air to get in there accept for the work you have done. you can get a fitting that will screw in to the bleed port and hook a hose on it, stick the end of the hose in a jug half full of coolant and start the car let it idle you will see the bubbles coming out let it run with out the radiator cap on when it starts filling the jug with coolantwhen you dont see any bubbles put the cap on and kill the car. Replace the bleed plug and fill the radiator back full , make sure the over flow tank is full of coolant start the car let it run it will get rid of any other air and push it in the overflow tank and when it cools off it will suck the coolant back to the radiator.

Here's my best shot.
There is no radiator bleed valve on your Saturn, if you are in the United States.
Here your radiator is a sealed system.
There is a drain valve on your radiator, maybe.
It will be located at the bottom of your radiator, and may be very hard to see because of stuff in the way.
This is not for bleeding.
If you wish to bleed your radiator, here's the scoop.
While the car and engine are cold, remove the radiator cap. Fill the radiator (or the overflow tank) at least half full, and have coolant ready to pour in if either one begins to have the level of coolant drop.
Start the engine and turn on your heater full blast.
Speed up the engine to a medium speed.
The water pump will pump the air out of your system, and it should be "bled" in less than 5 minutes.

Bleeding the cooling system


look at your top radiator hose is there a small bleed valve at the top of the thermostat housing when the upper hose attaches to? If so loosen the bleed valve and allow the cooling system to purge the air out of the system you can tell when the air is out of the system when a steady stream of coolant starts to flow out of the bleed valve, if there is no bleed valve take the top radiator hose off of the engine side and allow the cooling system to purge the air out through the top of the engine that way

How do I bleed the radiator in my C70 Volvo ? you can bleed a radiator in a C70 , rite ?..


  1. This method works best if the nose of the car is raised as high as possible. Park your car in your driveway. Let your car cool down. When your car is cooled down, you are ready to work on the cooling system.
  2. Open the hood of your car. Secure the hood with the safety handle. If you have a newer car, you should have a bleeder valve on the front of your radiator. Check in your owner's manual for the location of this valve. If you do start your car, open the valve with wrench and let your car heat up. The excess air will bleed out of your cooling system. Keep your car on long enough to give the (trapped air) time to bleed out of your system.
  3. Let your car cool down. Once the car is cool, take off the radiator cap. Did the level of the radiator fluid go down? If it did, it means you bled the air out of your cooling system. Replace the radiator fluid, turn on the car, and let it run. Replace radiator fluid as needed.
  4. Step 3 (above) is the way you will remove air from your cooling system if you do not have a bleeder valve on your radiator. You will leave the cap off the radiator. You will run your car until it heats up. As the air dissipates, the radiator fluid level will go down. You will fill up your radiator fluid to the correct level. Be careful because the heated radiator fluid will be hot. Always wear leather gloves and safety goggles when working on your radiator.
  5. Once the air dissipates and you fill the fluid, shut off the car. Let the car cool down. Once the car is cool, put the radiator cap back on the radiator. You may have to put more radiator fluid in the radiator. The level may fall as the car cools down. Now it is safe to drive your car. You have removed the trapped air from your cooling system.

MANY OF THESE VEHICLES REQUE YOU TO "BLEED" THE AIR OUT OF THE SYSTEM. THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING IS HIGHER THAN THE RADIATOR TOP,THUS PRODUCING AN AIR BUBBLE AT THE THERMOSTAT/HEAT SENSOR. THER IS USUALLY A SMALL PLUG OR BLEED FITTING IN THE AREA OF THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING. WARM ENGINE AND BLEED AIR SEVERAL TIMES AS REQUIRED HOPE IT WORKS !!!!!

1990 Subaru Liberty Overheats


Hi,

I had the same problem with my 1993 Liberty LX. Remove the thermostat (located inside bottom radiator hose engine connection - take the connection off and thermostat is inside). Reassemble (minus thermostat), reconnect bottom hose. Slowly (very, very slowly) refill the radiator and remove the bleed plug ( located beside the top hose connection to the radiator - a black square plug with a phillips head cross in the middle). When the radiator is full and clear water (no air bubbles) is coming out of the bleed point, replace the bleed plug and then the radiator cap.

Run the engine for five minutes (approx) or until normal engine temperature is reached. Allow the engine to cool down and recheck the water level - fill if necessary ensuring that the bleed plug is open and clear water is coming out of that point. Replace Bleed plug and then radiator cap. Run engine for five minutes (approx) and then test dive. If the engine overheats keep filling the radiator until there are no air bubbles coming from out of the bleed point.

This fixed my overheating problem. Good luck and safe motoring.
