Question about 1966 Ford Mustang

I have a 66 ford i got for my boy i have no spark i have 12 volts at both sides of the coil with the key on no matter how i adjust the points i got not spark

Cap may have a crack on it or change the router.

No spark out of the top of coil 61 plymouth valiant

Make sure you have 12V to the +side of the coil and that the points are breaking the -side. If you have 12V and the points are breaking ground, you have a bad coil.

I have 47 n8 ford tractor that cranks but won't start. Its getting compression and fuel but no spark. Spark plugs are new. Any suggestions before i go replacing parts?

First check points for corrosion and replace condenser if it has been sitting a while. Test for voltage at the coil small lead coming from the ignition switch. If you have done this all, the coil may be bad, and while you can test it with an ohm meter, this test is not perfect so you may want to either replace it or substitute a known good unit. CAUTION! six volt coils are different from 12 volt coils AND there are two different types of 12 volt coils--internal and external resistor coils. Most folks convert these old tractors to 12 volts, but to do so requires several changes besides the coils. More details on request.

There are 3 things to look for on these older cars, Air, Fuel, and Spark, You have found that you have fuel and I would say you are getting plenty of air, I would say you are loosing the power to the coil or the points are blistered causing you to loose fire. I don't remember the setting on the 57s but it can be found online. Just google it. If you have a volt/ohom meter, after the engine quits, check to see if you have 6 or 12 volts on the positive side of the coil. If not the you could have a electrical problem with the key switch. If you do have power, then look to the distributor. Be sure the key is turn off. The coil can give you a shock. Check the points and the condensor, The condensor can go bad and short the points out. The points can get glazed or blistered and stop the coil from firing when they get hot.

Hello! Check the Red/Light Green wire at the ignition switch connector for 12 volts when key is turned to start...If 12 volts is present the Ignition Module is defective...If 12 volts is NOT present the ignition switch is the culprit...Guru...saailer

I have a 66 Mustang with a 6 cylinder. I am getting no fire from coil , but have 12 volts to it. The coil and alternator are both new. Can someone help?

Have you checked the points? Pop your distributor cap and turn the engine over a little, Make sure they are opening and closing, and there is nothing in them. Clean them with a point file. They should open about the width of a hack saw blade.

Just finished 12 volt conversion on 49 V8 flathead. Starter engages but engine won't start. Appears to be getting fuel.

You might not have spark as the 12 volts needs a ballast resistor or the points burn out preytty quick. 8 volts at the coil in run with the points open and 0 with the points clsed and battery voltage at the coil when cranking. coil wire near the intake manifold while cranking should jump at least 2 inches. Closed points should be 0 volts at the neg on the coil. pos and neg should be the same 12 volts with the points open. if not either the coil or the points are bad. The condenser can fail and no spark with all the rest right

No spark between the distributor and coil

You need a voltmeter or test light to find 12 volts on one side terminal of the coil--the other side terminal goes to the distributor. If both sides have 12 volts, then the points may be dirty. If no 12 volts on the coil, trace that wire back to a resistor block on the firewall--check both ends for 12 volts. If still no 12 volts, check the ignition switch. Have you checked for a blown fuse?
Generators are usually nearly totally enclosed and long with several terminals sticking out. Alternators are shorter and wider with lots of ventilation slots and several terminals on the back. They also have a prominent fan behind a smaller pulley. You might see if you can find a Haynes service manual for this car if you are on your own.

Dear Chuck Check the voltage to you coil. You should have 12 volts at the coil with key on. Check the same wire for 12 volts during crank. If voltage drops to 9-10 you will have "No Start". If this is what happens jump 12 volts to coil with key on. Don't worry about trying to find why the voltage was lost because the connector for that circut is lost in wiring hell. Good luck Moe
