I had the same prob this week on my 98. if your lucky start with the top of your four wheel crankcase. there is a valve right on top that has four vac lines that plug in may be bad or stopped up. my prob was in my case its self. it wouldn't go in at all or it would kick out when it did. so it has to come out if that's the case..i found the most common prob is a stretched Chane. the next one was my prob i was lucky there. there is a round fork that controls your low hi two wheel a four wheel has three plastic guides on it. so replace and your good to go. i fixed mine my self it wasent that bad, but for them two probs you well have to remove and split the case to fine out.
good luck tom

First off you need to determine where the oil is coming. Engine, transfer case, transmission etc. If it was stuck in 4 wheel drive and you drove it on hard pavement for a ways with it making lots of noises you may have broken the case for the tyranny or transfer case. It is never good to operate a vehicle when it is not preforming as designed. Dodge for years in their pickups and caravans have had a weak spot in the gear train cases. Lucky it did not lock up on you in the middle of the road and require a wrecker to get it home because the tyranny broke a pin and locked the tyranny up completely. Welcome to the world of Dodge!

I don't have the owners manual, and have never owned a 4x4 in the past, as stupid as this sounds i don't know the proper procedure to engage 4 wheel drill hi

you have a lever or switch that engages 2wheel normal driving 4 wheel high for wet slippery conditions ,then you have four wheel low for real muddy and deep snow conditions
normally change from 2 wheel to four wheel high on the move .important nearly all 4 wheel drive vehicles must be stopped to engage low otherwise do damage to transmission

1999 chev sivlerado 1500 pickup stuck in four wheel high mode

Had the same problem. Easy fix. Grasp the plastic dashboard piece that goes around the instrument cluster and 4 wheel drive switch and pull off. Remove the 4 wheel drive switch. Unplug wiring harness from back of switch. use small screwdriver and carefully bend all metal tabs in back of switch slightly to one side. Re-install harness and switch back into dash. Should work fine, it just was not getting a connection. Worked great for me.
