Question about 2006 Chevrolet Equinox
Their is a service adsvisory and a warrantee fix. A number of key switches were faulty. A new one will solve the problem

Captaynkyrk is exactly right.
I do have something to add though, if only for future reference.
If it refuses to cooperate, get out your jack. Lift the front end until the tension on the wheels releases. You'll know when.
Lower it back down and try again.

I have a Equinox and this also happened to me. I've had my ignition replace twice.

Turn the key while turning the wheel, either to left or right. "jiggleitalittleit'llopen" I had the same thing happen to our GMC safari, the steering wheel got locked. The wheel had turned sharply and it was jammed. I fiddled with it turning the wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key, eventually it popped loose. 'WHEW!' Good Luck!
