Question about Saab 9 5
the best way is to have the car put onto a diagnostic fault finding machine when the light is on, a dealer will charge a lot for this but most independent garages will be far, far cheaper roughly about $40 or £25 once you have the code the fault is easy to locate.
However there are a few things that you can do without going to a garage at all. firstly the most common thing to cause this on any modern car is the MAF sensor also known as the air mass sensor.
these are located within the air intake system and often get dirty, the purpose of this part is to regulate the correct air to fuel mix. you can clean them with carb cleaner before having to replace them, and it's wort a go as it is so easy to do. Ask for more info on this and I can tell you what you need to do it your self.
Secondly the other possibility is the EGR valve, you can normally tell easily with this one as the car will lose power when driving around 30-50 mph is most noticeable and wont pull up hills to good. Again you can also clean this part as they do a dirty job so do get clogged up.
Lastly you can disconnect the car battery for a few hours, this will reset the cars on board computer and can often turn the light off and stop it from happening again, however if you do this and the light still comes on then a sensor of some type is at fault. Make sure you have the security code for the radio if you are going to do this or you will lose your radio until you get the code.
One more thing it could be is the lambda sensor also called oxygen sensor for the emissions, this is plugged into the exhaust to measure the amount of fumes the car gives out, you could tell if this was the issue by sitting in the car stationary and revving the engine hard, if the light illuminates then thetas a good indication. Like I say though I would be most tempted to say the air mass sensor as this is most often the culprit.
A code always helps so if you can they I'm sure it's worth the money to be sure.
p.s get back to me if you need me to better explain anything.
Happy new year.
