Question about Saab 9 5

1 Answer

2003 SAAB 9-5 Linear - I have an engine light that comes on periodically for about 4 days then goes off again. It has done this three times over the last two months - is there a way I can check what the issue is before I need to go to the dealership?

Great info. I would like more info on how to clean the MAF sensor. I don't have the radio code so disconnecting the battery isn't an option.

    Best,

Hi

the best way is to have the car put onto a diagnostic fault finding machine when the light is on, a dealer will charge a lot for this but most independent garages will be far, far cheaper roughly about $40 or £25 once you have the code the fault is easy to locate.

However there are a few things that you can do without going to a garage at all. firstly the most common thing to cause this on any modern car is the MAF sensor also known as the air mass sensor.

these are located within the air intake system and often get dirty, the purpose of this part is to regulate the correct air to fuel mix. you can clean them with carb cleaner before having to replace them, and it's wort a go as it is so easy to do. Ask for more info on this and I can tell you what you need to do it your self.

Secondly the other possibility is the EGR valve, you can normally tell easily with this one as the car will lose power when driving around 30-50 mph is most noticeable and wont pull up hills to good. Again you can also clean this part as they do a dirty job so do get clogged up.

Lastly you can disconnect the car battery for a few hours, this will reset the cars on board computer and can often turn the light off and stop it from happening again, however if you do this and the light still comes on then a sensor of some type is at fault. Make sure you have the security code for the radio if you are going to do this or you will lose your radio until you get the code.

One more thing it could be is the lambda sensor also called oxygen sensor for the emissions, this is plugged into the exhaust to measure the amount of fumes the car gives out, you could tell if this was the issue by sitting in the car stationary and revving the engine hard, if the light illuminates then thetas a good indication. Like I say though I would be most tempted to say the air mass sensor as this is most often the culprit.

A code always helps so if you can they I'm sure it's worth the money to be sure.

Regards

Dan

p.s get back to me if you need me to better explain anything.
Happy new year.

    Hi Eric

The MAF sensor is located on the air pipe but I need to know your engine size to give you exact info on where it is. Normally it is very obvious as it is a wire going into a plug on the air system. get back to me with the engine size and I will see if I have a picture.

You can use carburetter cleaner only, and must remove the sensor and spray it throughly leave to dry naturally, then replace.

    Regards

    Dan

I have a 2003 SAAB 9-3 2.0 Linear and just filled it up with gas and the gas gauge now reads empty and the engine light came on. I just got the car a week ago.

You may need a new fuel sender (sensor) is why car isn't reading your gas, and with the engine light now on that is cause your gas cap wasn't put on tight enough. I've had both of these happen to me with my car. Hope this helps.

Is it leaking inside the car? If so then it is more than likely the heater core is leaking antifreeze. You will need to replace the heater core under the dash.

That same thing happened to my 2002 Saab convertable and I believe it ended up being a failed throttle body sensor. It was quite the pricy part, I think after everything was said and done it was around $1,000. Good luck!
