Question about 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

I have a 1993 jeep cherkee 4wd. I use it to deliver mail, I replaced brakes, rotor , and drums. The problem i having is after a short period of stopping and starting the brakes feel like they seized up and pedal is hard to push down. Unable to build up speed for a period of time. Do the brakes need adjusting or what do i need to do?

Sounds like front brake calipers sticking or colapsed front brake hose .

Does a 1997 Gmc jimmy have back bums or pads

You mean drums? Depends on the vehicle options but should be rotors/pads. Easy to check - look through the wheel spokes and if pads, you should see the rotor.

Rear drums smell like something is burning and are hot.

remove the drum and inspect you job. small shoe on front big shoe on back.brake lube on the backing plate.lose the adjuster and inspect, lube the adjuster, give more free play on your parking brake cable 3 click is the normal before lock the wheel. Inspect the master cylinder for overfeel, remove any fluid over the max level. inspect the fluid for contamination(burn smell or oily)flush the system. lift the Jeep and pump on the brakes,if the wheel is locking open the bleeder screw.if brake fluid is under pressure, replace the hoses.

Help with installing brake shoes on 1993 buick park ave

Your Buick has front disc brakes...and rear drum brakes...the usual concern is the front pads as they are used more...these are the easiest pads to replace...as you only need to remove the caliper from the rotor with 2 bolts to lift off...Be sure to push the piston all the way back into the caliper to install new pads...rotors are pop offs too...The rear drum is different...the brake shoes are held on with clips and springs...try keeping one of the shoe assemblies intact while you switch out the other shoes...be sure to inspect the rear wheel brake cylinders for possible leaking...usually an oil build up inside the brake drum...these are inexpensive and should be switched out on a 93 Buick...:) Hope this helps.

What does my 95 jeep grand Cherokee 4wd have. disk or drums?

SHOULD HAVE DISKS ON THE FRONT & DRUMS ON THE BACK. EASY TO TELL BY LOOKING AT THE BACK SIDES OF WHEELS FOR THE BRAKE CALIPERS USED ON ALL DISK BRAKES.

Brakes real weak barely stop the truck

Change the brake pads/rear shoes and rotors and drums inspected/replaced. Sometimes Glazing of the rotors and drums will cause this--the parts have experienced an overheat condition causing the carbon atoms to rise to the surface and rapidly cool to keep the carbon at the surface thus making the rotors or drums very hard at the surface and lessen your stopping ability.

I would start there.

I have a brake fluid leak. I dont know what the

The part is called the wheel cylinder. (Not to be confused with the master brake cylinder that is under the hood and provides the pressure for the brakes to operate.

On a 1993, I suspect you have drum brakes, so the part you are describing as a rotor, (and that looks, well, round like a rotor), is actually not called a rotor. That is reserved to describe the round heavy plate on the front wheels.

Newer cars actually would possible have disc brakes with rotors on the front and rear wheels.

More than likely, especially on a 1993 vehicle, the seals in the wheel cyclinder are shot. Not sure how hard it is to get replacement parts, but the same re-build kits would likely have been used on several years and models of GM cars from the early to mid-90s.

BRAKE AIR LOSS

Likely your power booster is leaking vacuum. If so it needs to be replaced. Noise is under dash near where the brake pedal rod goes into the firewall?

This is a walk through for a 1993 2wd.

1. Jack up and remove tire

4. Remove rotor, if stuck hit on all sides with a rubber mallet until it breaks loose.
5. Install new rotor
6. Remove old pads from caliper
7. Using a c-clamp and a block of wood against caliper piston, compress piston until it is flush w/caliper
8. Install new pads in same location as old pads
9. Reinstall caliper, may have to nudge it into place with rubber mallet
10. Reinstall tire.

note: There are no bearings to grease. You must replace the entire hub assembly if yours are worn.
