Question about 2004 Pontiac Grand Am

2 Answers

I too have had issues with the elusive trans plug. Unfortunetly i think the previous owner did not change the fluid. I noticed my car running rough and found out the fluid was dangerously low. After I had it filled, it has run much better since. My car runs failry well but i fear the trans has been slightly damaged. It locks into gear a little hard sometimes and doesnt shift as smooth as it should, espeacially when i first start to drive it. What do you think the damage is and how much do you think it would cost to repair?

Before establishing you need repairs, try this. transmission stop leak. sold at most part store, inexpensive and the instruction are on the bottles ! I have used those at my garage for several year and it fixes the small slippage, along with an adjustment of the bands and, of course, a fluid and filter change. the job takes me is 1 hour and a half to 2 hours depending on year and models.
it's a cheap way to fix the problem.
you can usually just add the bottle into the transmission fluid but read the bottle first !

Has 216xxx miles runs rough after trans fluid change and filter

Hi James:
With those numbers on the odometer, I'd be wondering what services had been done, and looking at replacing the air filter and spark plugs, possibly spark plug wires. I'd also check the inside of the distributor cap for corrosion on the contacts.

Nissan D21 automatic wont move when running

Check the trans fluid level first with the engine running. If its low , top it up. Then go back and have them take care of the valve issue.

Hood wont latch completely shut

You should be doing many ,many things in
checking over any used car,the hood is the
least of your issues

If the oil has not been changed at least every
4000 miles since new ,you pass on all cars

If there is no record of trans fluid changes ,you run
& fast

You could have a shift solenoid in the valve body that is acting up. The only other issue I could think of would be an intermittent electrical connection. Check the connectors on the trans body, clean them and get some dialectric grease. Not saying this is the problem, just a place to start. Good luck!

I once owned a trans repair shop-
if your trans fluid was in any way other than
pink, your trans may as well come out
and be rebuilt

You have coil misfires as you know, several shown,
most likely only 1 real bad one.

You have O2 sensor codes as well as MAF

The only issue you have is to find the bad
You can't do that buy the codes you have
You have to walk a new coil till you find the
really bad one or get professional help
Don't count on them getting it right

After the misfire and coil issues are solved
there are other thing that can be looked into

I could fix this for you but that's not an internet

I definitely would stay away from a dealer.

Why was the trans let go until the fluid was
Not to be hurtful -but it is a well known fact
for decades, that trans fluid and power steering
fluids get changed every 30,000 miles on ALL
vehicles and never past 3 years.

Wish I could have been there sooner, before you
got it or since.

1996 Chevy K1500 4L60E trans problem

O.k. the small hose that you have coming out of the case is the trans vent. The one going up the firewall is for the transfer case. The trans vent should be hooked to the transfercase vent. You say you have a 383? Are you running the fuel injection system. Is this a 4L60E (the stock transmission). If you have fluid coming from the vent, the transmission is getting too hot. Replace the cooler. Do away with the radiator cooler and add one to the front in front of the condenser.

Won't go into any gears except for reverse

Hi, if you have noticed any metal fragments at all, this will constitute a rebuild in this case. this trans was stressed to the max when the previous owner lost the fluid and blew the gear pack. i would just rebuild at this point. the seal is not the issue here. the pack is fried.
