Question about 1988 Ford Taurus

Open Question

1988 Taurus (L), V6-3.0L engine - Fuel Pump Issues... Car has been running fine but lately the engine would sometimes seem to lack power while accelerating but was never a show stopper. Then the Fuel Pump starting to stay on after initial prime at startup which then caused the engine to stall and not stay running upon restarting vehicle. I then replaced the fuel pump and now the fuel pump will not engage at all. The engine started initially with the fuel still in the line but then quit and nothing further. Also have checked the inertial switch in trunk and not getting power to the connector when ignition switch on???? Finally I noticed the two ground wires attached to the negative battery post were very corroded and one was not even connected. Cleaned up, repaired and reconnected these to terminal to no avail. I've read somewhere in a Ford forum that the fuel pump pressure relay is inside of the IRCM that's attached at the top of the radiator just under the plastic protector. They say that if this is bad, I would have to replace the entire IRCM block to remedy. Is there somewhere else I should be looking prior to doing this??? I really hate to drop that darn tank again to check the power output to the pump if possible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

SOURCE: fuel pump location and replacement

You are looking for the constant control relay module- ( CCRM ) see below. The pump will be located inside the fuel tank. Most of the time , its the pump and not the relay but, it wouldn't hurt to check the relay out. Teh relay is housed in the CCRM. Its located behind the engine coolant reservoir.

SOURCE: Ford Escort 1998 fuel pump not working.

good old ford lol, try looking at the crank sensor its located at the front of the engine tucked in right hand side of exhaust manifold and gearbox, two pin plug, i have also known these to have no end of faults with the fusebox.
easy to remove, and solder the connections inside they all suffer eventually, if your not to handy with cars i recommend taking to a auto electrician, easy if you know how. Good luck Davelee

SOURCE: Intermittent fuel pump engagement when turning key - 2001 Taurus

try cleaning the connector that goes to the fuel pump, sometimes they corrode on inside. If that does not fix, test the wires feeding fuel pump with a multi meter until the condition shows itself again, if voltage drops to zero or very low then wiring problem, if voltage is unchanged with problem and fuel pump is not working and connectors are all clean, try replacement of fuel pump.

No fuel delivery from the Brand new fuel pump and filter. 1988 Ol

The pump is only suppose to run for 3 seconds if the engine is off. It will only stay pumping if the engine is running so the circuitry seems to be just fine. You prabably just got a bad pump again. Its common for repair shop to put 2, 3, and 4 pumps sometimes before they get one that works. We find it very common that a gauge will malfunction and the real problem is you just ran out of gas.

Bmw 1988 325is engine stops running sometimes - not lack of fuel or battery, new fuel pump. Sometimes wont start, starter motor working well, good battery. Replaced fuel pump - same deal.

The number one problem with these cars is with clogged fuel filters. They must be changed regularly. When you say it won't start, do you mean it cranks but won't fire? That could be a fuel pressure problem due to a clogged filter.

95 taurus stalls out when temperature exceeds 102. The temperature gage seems to be in the normal range , when this occurs. Once car has cooled off, it drives fine. I have read that the 95 Taurus has had...

your evaprative emissions could be purging into the engine at that point too, giving too rich a mixture.

here's what you are referring to:

ISSUE: A reduced power, hesitation, stalling at low vehicle speed, idling and/or a no start condition may occur on some vehicles in hot ambient temperatures and/or high altitudes. In addition, a no start may result while the engine is still hot and the vehicle has been parked for a short period. A stall may also occur when moving the vehicle from idle. This may be caused by a lack of vapor ports in the fuel pump, resulting in a vapor lock condition or internal high wear of the fuel pump components due to tank contaminants.
ACTION: Perform normal diagnostic routines as described in the appropriate year Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual (PC/ED). If the condition still exists after all diagnostics are followed, replace the fuel pump with a new turbine fuel pump. Refer to the following Part Application Chart for correct part usage. Also, replace in-line fuel filter with a new filter (E7DZ-9155-A). The new turbine fuel pump will reduce the possibility of vapor lock in high ambient temperatures. Refer to the appropriate model/year Service Manual for removal and installation procedures.

I have a 1985 fleetwood brougham 4100 V8 engine. When i accelerate I have no power from 0 to 35 or 40 mpr. Then runs normal with plenty of power. What could be the cause of this problem? Also can you...

It could be a lack of gas. That is what it sounds like to me. I would recommend changing the fuel filter. Also look at your mechanical fuel pump. Check the psi and if it is above 30 then its fine. Reason i think it is lack of gas is. Your car has a mechanical fuel pump the faster you go the more gas it is put into the carb. Also you have a set scream on your quadrojet carb tighten it down to make your gas set to rich. This will give you less mpg but also will make more gas be put into the carb. Hope it helped. Also if you just installed a new fuel filter make sure its not in backwards.
