Diesel engine? If it is, your glow plug system might by cycling, and this will cause a large amp draw. (This is normal)

It sounds to me like the voltage regulator is trying to decide what to do after the voltage draw from starting.
I would not be to concerned unless it stayed low.

the s/p button changes the shift points,
normal is mpg (early shifts)
sports is later shift, faster accel, and lower MPG
if the lamp and seat of pants says the trans is stuck in Sport
mode then it is, as it seems...
so the switch is bad or the wire to it, from TCM to switch
using a voltmeter finds this out fast, go one?
keyon, no start.
connect meter to switch, does the voltage change from 0v
to 5 or 12v, when switched, no then the switch is bad.
if a 0v all the time the switch is bad or the line (wire shorted to body)
remove wire. (hot side not ground) and does the voltage rise over 5v
then the switch is shorted.
what we do is check both pins on the switch, one is ground
other is signal, if it dont change with the switch action we fine out why
ask how.
0v. all time, switch shorted or wire shorted to body
>5v all the time, wire cut, switch broken in the open position.
0v to high volts with switch action is good.

Why does 2003 windstar shut down electrically

Before replacing alternator testing should be done , is there B+ voltage at the heavier gage wire on the back of the alternator . Could have a blown fuse or fusible link . Your vehicle from what you have posted , isn't charging . Plus there is a regular fuse located in the under hood fuse box F1.13 - 10 amp this supply's B+ voltage to the orange with lit blue stripe wire at the three wire connector plugged into the alternator . The other two wires come from the PCM - engine computer . This charging system is computer controlled . Ford PCM controlled alternator testing

1988 Ford Bronco ll---I've experianced several times a problem with the engine just shutting down at any given time while driving. Had a mechanic tell me he replaced a fuel switch somewhere under the...

The Bronco has TWO fuel pumps, a low pressure and a high pressure. Low pressure is located in the fuel tank, the high pressure is located....Attached to the LH frame rail ahead of the fuel reservoir.
my guest would be the high pressure pump is getting hot and shutting off, cooled down and starts back up again ??

1996 chevrolet cavalier would not start but started with a boost and ran fine till i shut it off then would not start again unless i boosted it but the problem worsened it started shutting down on the road...

you surely need a new battery. a car may crank but will not start due to low battery voltage. My suspect is that the battery may have enough ampere to crank the motor but the voltage is too low to run the electronic system. if you have a meter, check the voltage as you crank the car. This is a possiblility but it is a rare occurence.

My son has a 1992 Barina and it is completly dead. Battery has been tested and is fine. Was going well and then not driven for couple of days and now nothing

It has a short somewhere, the easiest way to find a short is to charge the battery, put an volt meter on the battery, then start pulling fuses in the panel in the car and watch for a rise in voltage. make sure everythimg is turned off. once you get a rise in voltage that will tell you what area/s to look at. if one fuse runs several things, install fuse and unplug one at a time and watch for rise

Hello, day before yesterday my car wont start i turn the key it made one click noise nothing else i tried again same thing..got a boost and car started worked fine all day ,, took car to autozone auto...

You were told the battery and alternator was good? how did they check your alternator? did they perform a load check on the battery? you should check the battery out yourself with a cheap digital meter...it should read at least 12.5v..if not the alternator is not charging your cars battery that is why a jump keeps it going for about a day and then your battery will drain and it wont start again until you get another jump; or your serpentine belt is worn out and slipping. Do the windows fog up in cold weather only?...because that would be normal with you sitting in your car for awhile with a dirty inside windshield and trying to start the car for long time..it just could be a coincidence. The only reason your car started that time in haste was because it sat overnight and it gave the battery a chance to charge up somewhat and it barely had enough juice to turn it over. have AAA or someone jump start you, then take a voltage reading right as it starts and you should see the voltage rise to about 14.5v then stabilize slowly down to 13v or>. this voltage is being properly regulated!

Low Beams keep burning out! Sometime both sides. I replaced approx. 6 bulbs in the past 3 months. All other lights are working fine. No short indicated. 2002 Toyota RAV4

Hmm, That is rather whacky.

You'll need 2 (two) people, probably, unless you have a Volt-Ohm meter with really long leads.

Attach VOM (20v range DC across low beam circuit (ex: pull the bulb out and push the probes into the low beam slots). Start vehicle. Note voltage. Should be somewhere between 13.5 and 14.4 Volts DC. (If you read neg voltage, you've got the leads reversed!!!). If too high, voltage regulator may be shot.

Have someone rev the engine to, say, 3500 RPM. Measure voltage at that RPM to see if still in nominal (<14.5 VDC) range. This could also indicate faulty voltage regulator.

return everything to normal.

Oh, one other by-the-by: You're not using those HID look-a-like bulbs sold at auto parts stores, are you? They are notoriously cheap and have notoriously short lives.

Good luck.

Start vehicle, turn on low beams. with Volt-Ohm meter (VOM), m

Volt meter on 01 Dakota is low but truck runs fine

i presume you live in a warm climate for one thing. the voltage regulator appears to be going bad... the problem with that is most modern alternators have them built into the starter. you may be able to r&r that part or you may have to replace the alternator.
If i remember right autozone will test it for free tho i'm not in the states myself so i'm not sure.
