Suspension when the van is moving forward the tire jumps up and down and in and out . what could be the problem

Key on engine running ,, look the light of PRNDL , try shift lever into R and N and D and L.if light does not turn on. the prndl switch on transmission near shifter shaft is defect water got inside the switch,salt.ice.

Hi Jason, I suggest you take the vehicle for wheel alignment and inspection of ball joints, suspension bushes and steering linkages. Also ask for an inspection for broken chassis and suspension mounts. Regards John

My 98 van bounces when im going 25 to 55 and i dont know y. checked tires struts and berrings.


well, how did you check struts. removed them and did a compression stroke test? Front or rear? both? suspension controls ride stability, shocks,struts,springs, bushings,wheel balance. even if parts look good doesnt mean they are. bounce trk from the outside. does it keep bouncing for a few or does it bounce 3 times or less depending on how hard you jumped on the bumper. Im sure you need new struts or shocks if it is bouncy.

Possible broken belt in one of your tires. Move the 2 front tires to the rear, see if the problem follows the tires. Or run your hand around the circumference of the tires to feel for a bulge. Other, more expensive problems could be in the suspension. A-arm bushings, or wheel bearings.

if the tires are fairly new, and this is a recent problem, there may be a good chance the tires weren't balanced right. or possibly a weight wasn't put on correct and fell off. have the balance checked.

Tire jumps


Sounds like something is loose in your right front suspension. You need to get the wheel off of the ground and push it up and down, in and out to see if you feel something loose. Look for something broken or loose. If you can't, bring it somewhere to have it looked at.

Bigger Tires on a Caravan


a larger tire will turn a bit slower, but it will also throw off your speedometer and engine control system by changing final drive gear ratio. With a smaller engine this is critical because you don't make enough torque to overcome the added roll resistance. I would change to a more "heavy duty" tire (higher load rating) than whatever you are using. They will cost more but will handle the load better. No tire is safe if it is very worn, so don't expect that they will not fail after that happens..
I would also rotate them more frequently...that spreads out the wear a bit.
Regarding your suspension, If carrying loads, you can change over to variable rate rear springs and possibly coil over shocks. this will help with "dragging" the back end.

Vibrations while driving like you are describing can come from tires that have defects (internally broken belts) (wheel weights that have fallen off) or a bent rim (perhaps from another driver [not you :-) ] hitting a curb) Are the tires worn? Have they been balanced and rotated regularly? You report no vibration in the steering wheel.
Vibrations during braking can be warped rotors or discs (but this doesn't sound like your problem since these kind are usually felt in the steering wheel during braking).
If and only if you feel like you can do this safely,
you can try getting the car up to 55, placing the car in neutral, then switching the "engine off" but leave the "key on" (be warned the power steering will go out but the vehicle can still be steered though the steering wheel will be much stiffer) if you try this (do it perhaps in a vacant parking lot or on an empty road) and the vibration goes away with the engine off but while the vehicle is still moving, then the vibration is engine or transmission related. If this is the case you might hope for maybe a bad engine mount. Bad engine mounts can be diagnosed with the vehicle stopped as well. However, if the vibration remains with the van moving forward but with the engine off, the vibration is likely a problem with the tires or suspension. Try to provide some more info.
If you don't feel comfortable trying the above suggestion, please take the vehicle in to an ASE certified suspension and steering professional for further diagnosis.

Finally, I had a similar situation happen to me today. I was riding with a friend in their van and the vehicle started vibrating more and more around 55 mph. We stopped and carefully checked the front tires (including the lug nuts for tightness) but
found a tire defect. (it had several broken steel belts that caused a bulge in the tire and thus the vibration) We changed the tire and the vibration was gone. Good luck to you.
