Trans overheat I have a 2000 Ford Taurus VIN # 1FAFP53SXYG112524.I will give you some background info on the car.I purchased the car with 65,000 miles on it with a knock in the engine(very unusual for these engines. At the time it drove OK other than the engine was making lots of noise.I purchased a used engine with about the same mileage and had it installed. When I picked it up it ran good but all of a sudden the check engine light came on then the warning light in the dash cluster with the asterics started flashing.I at this time have not got the code number but my mechanic said it crossed to trans overheating.I have not driven it but it showed no signs of overheating,no foaming of the fluid and it shifts fine.As this occured after the engine install I presume it is a problem in the install.I just wanted to see if anyone out there might know of a cure for the problem.

The engine does not overheat .It goes to running temp with no problems, the code that comes up crosses to trans overheat and it sets of the limp mode light flash on the dash cluster.

Hi,

Based on your description that the transmission functions normally, then it could just possible be a bad sensor (likely) or a loose/corroded/dirty connection to the sensor (most likely).

To my knowledge, most of the transmission (AX4N) sensors for a Ford Taurus are connected by two (2) big connectors (and a third for the VSS or OSS). The 1st is easily seen (on top of the transmission, 8-10pins) and the 2nd (further, 9pins) that is used for 3 transmission solenoid connections, trans oil temp, pressure control solenoid, torque converter clutch, PCM, junction box among others.

You could try using an electrical contact cleaner (pls be careful, some are too strong to melt plastics) or manually clean the male/female plugs/jacks or terminal pins.

You may want to reference this page for complimentary information and some images.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi, IF you said the car is not overheating the gauge is normal.
But the mechanic said the code is for overheated the transmission., And the computer send to limp mode.
By your comment this come after you replece the engine.
OK.. Check the connector on the transmission all the wires going to the selenoids and the transmission range switch.
because you have a electrical problem, thinking if you drive the car it's doing the problemwhen the engine is cool or when the engine is at normal temperature?.
IF doing at all times, the problem is electrical.

  • Anonymous Jul 09, 2008

OK. the posible codes for a over5heated transsmission are.

P0712 Trans Fluid Temperature sensor, indicate 340 f or (171c)

    sensor circuit shorted.

P0713 Trans fluid temperature sensor, -45 f or (-43c) sensor circuit open.

The sensor is located inside of the transmission. if never touch inside of the transmission, Check the connector. That goes almost in the center of the trans. it use 10 wires of pins.

For corrosion or damaged, repair as nessesary. and recheck ..

I hope this is usesful for you.

    Thank for using fixya.

OK.. Here are the colour of the wires for the Trans fluid temperature sensor. on the connector mount on top of the trans.

Pin # 9 , Gray and red, in the ecm pin # 91 Voltage reference.

Pin # 5 , Orange and black. in the ecm pin # 37 with KOEO the voltage is .5v

This wires you have to check,

Check the water pump, if coolant does not go down it is the more likely, check also that the radiator fan is starting, it starts only when the engine is hot , and sometimes at the garage they don't see that is faulty.

If the fan is not working check the fuses, check the thermostat switch at the base of radiator, and finally fan motor.

No drive or reverse on 2003 mercury Sable

If that transaxle has been in the car since
2003 & never been rebuilt, it is due now

Taurus transaxles avg is about 65,000 miles
over the last 25 years or so,that info is avail
on the internet

I also owned a trans repair shop & over 50% of

Don't shifts in 3rd gear on less you stop and go again

Dirty Valve Body in transaxle or internal wear

No easy fix there

The life of a taurus trans is about 65,000 avg from the
first one built thru whenever, late 90's
You can research that

I had a trans shop & caravans & taurus were 70% of the work
Just a lot of them out there I guess & when you don't change
the fluid everyone breaks down, that is 90% of any trans shop
business

Car looses power when driving, won't accelerate

Most likely the exhaust converter is worn out
& broken up inside & blocking exhaust flow

I will assume your gas filter hasn't been on the
car for ten years

You can not run O2 Sensors over 100,000 miles
or Spark Plugs over 3 years or 60,000 miles

The TPS Sensor could be worn out

If the Transaxle is 13 years old that surely could
be slipping & in need of a rebuild
The average Taurus trans goes 65,000 miles then
breaks down

I have a 2003 Ford Windstar with 65k miles and the trans went out with no warning. It drove fine

That is perfectly normal for that vehicle

That issue has been their for years ,going
back to previous model whatever that was called

Not many van type vehicles have transaxles that last
or make 100,000 miles

The history on the ford taurus is about 65,000
& that is a half decent transaxle & that goes back
25 years

When im going around 60 mph my car is at 2000 rpms it feels like it needs to shift when im at 65 its at 2500 and 70 3000 ii dont know if its the overdrive or what but i would like to know the problem and...

Sounds like it isn't going into lockup

If it is the original transaxle from 2002,
it is pretty well used up and needs to be
rebuilt.

A Taurus trans is good for 65,000 to
100,000 only.

I made a living on them and caravans
when I owned a trans shop
