Question about Honda Accord

1 Answer

I've been reading over some problems similar to mine, but I would like some clarity. Car Info: 1992 Honda Accord EX, 190K My D4 light started blinking after I got it from the mechanic. They were replacing my starter, exhaust pipe and muffler. As far as I understand, the D4 light is an indicator that something is not reading correctly with the transmission is that right? Is there any possible way that when the mechanic replaced the starter something could have been jostled or shorted out? The reason why I'm not 100% convinced that its my tranny going out is because it doesnt seem to be driving any differently before. It doesnt have immediate pick up when accelerating, but it hasnt in the 7 years that I've owned it. I just find it odd that the light started blinking after the service. What are your thoughts? Also, to add insult to injury I noticed when checking my tranny fluid that either my radiator cap or tube to the overflow chamber is leaking AND a vacuum hose that looks like it goes from my engine to cruise control is leaking.

It sounds like the guy that changed the starter either removed or damaged a connector or connection to the transmission. HOWEVER, the starter repair could have just been coincidental as there were a lot of problems with the transmission control units in these cars. The TCU is underneath the floor on the passenger side. There is a capacitor inside it that fails and can be replaced or you can get a reman unit off ebay. I would not buy a used one as most are bad. I would also do some extensive googling on "accord tcu". Plug in "1992" and "capacitor" into you search for more specifics.

The Blinking D4 light means that the transmission computer needs to be diagnosed, because there is a malfunction.

92 Honda accord ex D4 light/acceleration problem

Change your main relay assembly under the dash on drivers side. I was able to get my small hands under there and change mine out readily--not easy to get to as I didn't want to take the dash apart, but I got it done. If you have other problems after then find you a used TCU unit and change it out (passenger side where they put their feet, pull the carpet up, you will see easy, easily replaceable).

Check engine and d4 lights on

d4 is flashing as a trouble code for the automatic transmission... i would say without research that it is a code for a transmission solenoid. maybe while washing the car some water got in and caused a short...these solenoids are usually weatherproof....you could try disconnscting the battery for 30 secs..to clear the trouble code and then start the car. remember you may lose your preset info!
