Question about Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Hello, I would like information/advice on replacing the rear transmission seal on a 1994, 5.2, 4x4 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I am pretty sure it is the source of the leak. I don't know of any tool that can air in the removal, and I am afraid it will have to come off in pieces, but being as careful as possible not to scratch the rear shaft. Replacement seal doesn't look like the original, which worries me.

You should first make absolutely certain that it is in fact the source of the leak. This can be accomplished using a black light reactive dye which is available at any well stocked autoparts store and a blacklight. The dye is added to your transmission fluid and then later you shine the black light to be able to pinpoint the source of the leak.
Good luck.

Are any of the parts on a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee interchangeable with a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee? rear axle, wheels, power-steering, hood hyrdraulics?

A few parts should be interchangeable. Most of them will not be however since the Grand Cherokee underwent a complete re-design for 1999. Some engines and transmissions will switch out. The rear axle in the 97 was commonly a Dana/Spicer 35. This was replaced with a larger rear differential in 1999 for increased towing capacity. The wheels should interchange ok, power steering system was pretty much the same and as long as the hydraulics (supports) on the hood are the same length they should work

Sounds like the rear main oil seal on your motor is leaking. In order for it to be replaced, the transmission has to be removed. Not an easy task for the backyard mechanic.

1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Oil leaking from the flywheel. Is this the crankshaft oil seal? How dificult to replace. Any good websites with drawings for reference?

Very likely it's the rear seal. You will have to remove the transmission from the jeep in order to gain access to and change that seal.

How hard is it to replace the rear maine oil seal on a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2 liter V8 4 wheel drive

There is some work involve in replacing rear main seal, seal sit in the rear of the engine block, the transmission will have to be remove, and the fly wheel to get to the rear main seal.If you have never removed a engine or transmission, it might be best to pay and have some one do it for you.

New oil pan gasket leaks at the rear.

Try again use silicon sealant where needed eg ends of rubber All bolt holes in pan need to be "peaned" back (hit with ball hammer) Watch torque settings. Often too tight splits gasket. Clean Dry surface = no oil
Make sure it's not the main seal leaking !

I am changing the whole rear end on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Replacing it with the same type I'm removing. It looks pretty simple. Is there anything I need to watch for or do?

Make sure the driveshaft is wired up.All brake lines are capped to stop air getting in.Replace the diff oil and make sure it has the friction modifier in it or that you add it to the oil.(200ml).Check for axle seal leaks. Its also a very good time to replace the universal joint at the rear.If you don't,at least relube the uni.DON,T let the needle bearing caps come apart. if the car is on a hoist, allow at least 3 hours to do the job and time it so if you do need to get some parts, the parts shops are open(bearings, seals etc.)Hope this helps

Cost to replace rear main seals on 2001 jeep gr. cher. ltd.

Actually yeah you are in luck that combination only requires dropping the oil pan. The seal is actually fairly easy to do it yourself, if your inclined. Parts about $20.00 and it's book rate is 5 hours. around here shops charge around $85/hour. About $500.00 out the door or under $50.00 if you want to get greasy. Here's a good picture guided step by step on a Jeep CJ with a 4.0 liter, yours is pretty much the same:
