Make sure your brake lights work, if they do then the problem is the solenoid which controls the locking of the shifter mechanism and is located under a panel somewhere around the base of the shifter shaft...... if your brake lights don't work, you probably need to replace their fuse which shoulod fix the problem.

Why won't my 1998 chrysler cirrus shift into gear?

I'm not familiar with YOUR Chrysler, BUT... my brother' father-in-law had a Buick [about 1998 model] that would NOT shift into any gear UNLESS the brake pedal was FULLY DEPRESSED!!!!!

I could move the shift lever into any of the indicator positions, but the transmission would not engage if my foot was not firmly on the brake pedal while selecting a gear position!

I have a Lexus RX300 1999 model and have this recent problem. engine running normally but gear gets stuck in Parking mode and won't shift. had to depress the emergency button on the gear shift and

Hi there,

Some automatic vehicles rely on the brake switch (mounted on brake pedal) to be activated by depressing brake pedal. This signal then operates a relay and switch, to release the gear lever.

Firstly, I would check the brake pedal switch (are your brake lights working?).

If brake switch is confirmed OK, then inspect the relay (and related circuit components) of the gear release switch.

1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass stuck in park

I had this problem and after much trial and error found that it was the transmission shift interlock solenoid. It is located under the plastic housing at the base of the shifter. Google P/N# 924-705 (Dorman brand part). You can find it for less than $45.00. Needs no tools to remove this part, only to remove cover to get to it. Both ends of this part have plastic pieces with a 1/2 hole type cup that press right on to a ball end. Good Luck!

My 1998 Honda civic ex won't move but the motor

Have you just replaced the clutch? Taken out the transaxle, and put it back in? Are you sure transmission was in good condition before this? If so, review your procedure carefully to be sure you got it all back right.
Watch the slave cylinder while someone depresses clutch. You should see the little plunger move slightly out and move the clutch lever back. The lever moves the release bearing inside bell housing into contact with the pressure plate. If slave cylinder doesn't move at all, try bleeding again. The plunger has to move when clutch is engaged.
I'm not sure what you mean by "will shift but won't go into gear". You mean it's actually going into a gear position and car won't move? Or it won't go into any gear, period. As if you had no clutch?

My 1998 Tracer is stuck in park. When I push on the brake, the button on the shifter will not push in.

Hello! It sounds as if your gear shift lock isn't working properly - it should release when you depress the brake pedal. You're not stuck, however. There is a small plastic piece to the side of the gear shift on the console - you can pry this piece up and off, revealing a hole underneath. Insert a screwdriver straight down and you will push on the manual gear shift release button - once you do that you will be able to move the gear shift. This can be caused by a few things - weak battery, or the release button is broken behind the brake pedal.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Manual transmission will not shift into any gear, even when the clutch is completely depressed. It's a hard shift to begin with and now when i have to come to a stop and say move it out of 4th gear and try...

The problem sounds like the clutch. If you put it in 1st., then start it up, does it try to move with you foot on the clutch? Does the clutch pedal feel different than normal.
