Occasionally, about every 6 to 8 times tried, the engine will turn but not start. If I turn the key off for about 3 seconds, it usually starts within a few turns. Do you know what can cause this?

A year, make, model, and engine size would help but I will through this at you.

Instead of just trying to start the car turn the key to the run position and wait 3 seconds. Turn the key off and immediately turn the key back to the run position and wait another 3 seconds. Turn the key off then try to start. Do this every time you try to start the car. If you symptom never occurs when you start the vehicle like this than I would suggest taking a closer look at the fuel system.

I called myself programming the new keys for my pt cruiser, but,it didnt take. At first it would start and run for a few seconds, now it wont turn over.what did I do wrong and how can I fix this?

Takes the master key to get it started again. The security gives you 3 tries to get the vehicle started, after the third time, it kills the starter.
2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Note: You must have two valid keys to add a new key to the system.
1. Insert the first valid key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the
ON/RUN position for at least three seconds, but no longer than 15 seconds.
Then, Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the first key.
2. Insert the second valid key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to
the ON/RUN position within 15 seconds. After 10 seconds, a chime will sound.
In addition, the Vehicle Security Light will begin to flash. Turn the ignition switch
to the LOCK position and remove the second key.
3. Insert the new key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the
ON/RUN position.within 60 seconds. After 10 seconds, a single chime will
sound. In addition, the Vehicle Security Light will stop flashing. To indicate that
programming is complete, the Vehicle Security Light will turn on again for
seconds and then turn off.
The new key is now programmed. The Remote Keyless Entry transmitter will
also be programmed during this procedure.
Repeat this procedure to program up to eight keys.

Programming ingition key with a chip in it

  • For 1998 and newer Fords there is no way to program a new Transponder key unless you have two already programmed keys. 1998 and older you could do this in about three minutes. This one has to be hooked up to a scanner.

  • Now if you do have two keys already programmed then follow these steps.
  1. Insert first programmed key in the ignition.
  2. Turn the ignition to start (run) for two seconds and back to off. The ignition should stay on for at least one second.
  3. Remove that key and within 10 seconds stick the second programmed key into the ignition. Turn the ignition to start (run) for two seconds and back to off. The ignition should stay on for at least one second.
  4. Remove the key.
  5. Now insert the key needing to be programmed into the ignition (within 20 seconds) and turn the ignition to start (run) for two seconds and then back off.
  6. The security light will light up for 3 seconds indicating the key is now programmed.
  7. Now wait a couple minutes before starting your car and your done.

Hard to start after it sits u have to keep cranking for at least 30 t0 45 sec

When you turn on the key the fuel pump relay causes the pump to run for one second to bring the fuel manifold presure up. If the vehicle has 'sat' for a long time, this one second is not long enough and so the engine is struggling to get enough fuel to fire. Try turning the key on and off every couple of seconds for about a minute, then turn the key to the start position. The engine should now start. Do not touch any controls such as the throttle, the computer will take care of all this.

Car was stolen ignition was ripped out of 2002 grandam, now car won't start with ignition and security light keeps flashing

groan.....gunna need a bit more info. but i'll try. What portion of the ignition was ripped out? The tumbler + switch? If so, you might need to get the car's system resent to recognize that it has a new ignition put in. Sime vehicles have a theft prevention system in place to prevent the vehicle from running if its been hot wired. Your best bet would be to replace the damaged ignition components (You did not mention if you did or not). If it still doesn't work after you have replced all of the ignition components. You can try to reset the vehicle (doesn't work on all) disconnect negative battery terminal and go back into vehicle and press down the brake pedal for about 30 seconds then reconnect battery and try it....good luck, hope this helps

Takes multiple times to start

I think you have a faling fuel pump or a bad pressure regulator allowing fuel pressure to bleed down when the engine is off.
Try this test - When you start the car for the first time of the day, turn the key to "ON", wait a few seconds, turn the key off. Wait about 15 seconds, turn the key to "ON" again, wait a few seconds. Then wait one final time for 1 seconds and try starting the car. If it starts right away, that means fule pressure is bleeding of due to a bad check vavle int he fuel pump, a bad fuel pump or a bad pressure regulator.

The reason for the procedure is because when you turn the key to "ON", the fuel pump runs for 2 seconds and then shuts off if the engine is not running. The 15 seconds wait is for the power and fuel pump relay to cycle off before it will run the pump again.

Let us know how the test comes out. The fuel pump is in the fuel tank and hums when it is running.
