Hi, this is normal operation of the system. The defroster uses the A/C to remove moisture from the air. Please let me know if you have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

thanks but isn't that a stupid design? I get warm air to defrost and cool air from the vents. I'm also worried about the mileage since the compressor seems to come on.

You should not be getting any cool air unless you are using a bi-level setting. With the unit set to defrost, all of the air should be going through the heater core and none should come out of the front vents. If it is, your doors are not operating properly. Can you tell me your model and year?

When my car turn on start switch...eng running. I don't turn on a/c switch but compressor pully and clutch are running together Is it ok or problems? Car is BMW e90. 323i 2010 year Thank you

Is the heater control in the defrost position? Most cars will automatically turn the air conditioning compressor on when defrost is selected to dehumidify the air being directed on the windshield. This keeps the windshield from fogging up, and helps defog the windshield more quickly if it is already fogged up.

I have a 2005 chevy malibu LS, 3.5 eng.when i turn on my defrosters the air cond. comes on with temp control on heat also have a message on the message center {RADIO} how do I clear this message.

It is normal for the A/C compressor to come on during defrost mode. This is done to prevent provide dry air to the windshield to prevent fogging when the defroster is turned on. The blend door is designed to allow heat to the windshield, but also some of the cool air from the evaporator to prevent fogging.

When i turn my knob to defrost the ac light comes on

Yes it does.
In defrost mode, the compressor runs to dry the air blowing onto the windshield. Normal on all cars with air conditioning.

What to do when air conditioning vents on 2005 chevrolet silverado1500/v6 ?

It is all electronic these days an electric motor is controled by the selector on the dash. Remove the dash surround: gear selector in 1st engine off, tile steering wheel down, push down FIRMLY on the top of surround and pull towards you and off it comes. Remove the two screws that hold the heater/air cond. control in, there are 4 plastic clips as backup release them and gently remove the control, inspect for loose connectors (there are 2) it helps to run the blower to see if you have found the problem- I did.

There is a blend door problem.

---
prev.gif next.gif HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING Refer to Section 1 for discharging and charging of the air conditioning system. The heating system provides heating, ventilation and defrosting for the windshield and side windows. The heater core is a heat exchanger supplied with coolant from the engine cooling system. Temperature is controlled by the temperature valve which moves an air door that directs air flow through the heater core for more heat or bypasses the heater core for less heat. Vacuum actuators control the mode doors which direct air flow to the outlet ducts. The mode selector on the control panel directs engine vacuum to the actuators. The position of the mode doors determines whether air flows from the floor, panel, defrost or panel and defrost ducts (bi-level mode).

When I turn my vent selector to defrost on the far right (air con off)the air conditioning comes on. The dash vents will blow ambient air, but defrost setting blows air con. Any ideas?

It's normal for the A/C compressor to come on with the defroster to dehumidify the air so the windsheild won't fog up under humid conditions. You can still control the air temp. out the vents with the temp. select switch.

Should be a central vaccuum block behind your selector for vent defrost etc. perhaps that is going bad. They're expensive for something made of plastic. cheaper alternative is the junk yard.

Turned air condition on, went to turn it off (button out) light is still on and color of light is green when on or off 2009 kia rio.

I may be able to help but, I need some more information. When you turned on your A/C what was the vent selector set at (Floor, Face, Defroster)?

Most newer cars with A/C systems have a built in setting when you set your vent selector to Defrost mode (blowing on the windshield) that automatically turns on the A/C unit. This is normal due to the fact that a fogged up windshield is from water vapor and the A/C does an awesome job of drying the air so it can more effectively and quickly remove that annoying water vapor from your windshield so you can see better while driving.

Try changing the vent selector to full face vent (the vents from the dashboard that you can adjust) and switch on/off the A/C and see if that solves your problem.

When put my selector to windshield my ac turning on automatically

are you referring to the windshield defroster? if so, then it is normal for the ac compressor to cycle on and off, the reason being that, during winter months, is helpful for the proper function of the ac compressor to cycle on and off so as to not lock up.
