It receives positive voltage through the sending unit which is mounted in the fuel tank and acts as a variable resistor.

The gauge can be tested by briefly connecting the positive terminal of the battery to the side of the plug which is not grounded and watching to gauge. If the needle quickly moves, the gauge is fine and the sending unit is the cause of the problem. If the needle doesn't move, then the gauge itself is defective.

i will try this thank you

  • duallyboy23 Jan 02, 2011

when ttrying this test with the unit unplugged tha gauge goes to full when givivg battery hot the gauge does not move when doing the test with it plugged in i get a nasty spark still nothing moves

  • truffulaseed Jan 02, 2011

If the gauge moves to full when giving battery hot, then ther problem is definitely your fuel level sending unit, which is located in the fuel tank. Good Luck!

04 400ex has lots of spark cpmpression and fuel timing is correct i dont no wat else to do

Did you check fuel pressure with a gauge? Autozone, some others, rent or loan fuel pressure gauges. If fuel pressure is good, check injector circuit. Each injector has two wires-power and ground. With key on- engine off, each injector should have battery voltage on the power wire (each power wire would be same color to all injectors)-use a test light or voltmeter to check for power.

If injectors have power to them with key on, post back and I can tell you how to check injector ground circuit with a test light. .... well here, you clip the test light lead on the POSITIVE battery post, and stick tester probe into the ground side terminal of injector connector. Now have someone crank the engine over: if ground circuit is good, the test light should be blinking. If both tests work, power and ground circuit, then injector circuit is good and they should be pulsing to spray fuel into the cylinders. Let me know what you find.

1984 Ford F150 Fuel gauge reads empty

I would bet the sending unit is bad but lets check it, a good test i use is that i have a used sending unit i connect to wiring to test the gauge and wiring, if the gauge moves when i move the testing unit then i know the gauge is good and the wiring to, locte the connector at fuel tank, and unplug it, this will be the one the leads to top of the tank and the connector will be on the side be the frame on drivers side, the way you know you have the right connector will be the truck will not run as this connector has the sending unit and pump wires in it, if the gauge goes to full then you know the wiring is good and the gauge is good, you can jump the two wires and gauge should go to full also. the problem is you must get the right wires for sending unit or you may pop fuse, let me see if i can get you a wiring diagram or just do the full test by unplugging connector.

Okay, your sending unit has a yellow and white wire, thats the sending unit wire, the other is a ground and we wont worry about that. so if you want to see if gauge will go to empty or full just unplug connector and gauge will move to full then if you take a wire and jump the yellow wire with white stripe to a good ground the gauge will go to empty, the thing is your gauge is on empty so sending unit may be grounded out, good day10_21_2012_4_15_34_pm.gif

My fuel gage is reading full at all times and the radio will not come on is this a fuse issue or two different issues?

You definitely have two different issues as the fuel gauge and radio are on different circuits. The radio could be a blown fuse, which would require finding a short circuit. The fuel gauge could be as simple as a bad connection at the sending unit or a lost ground on the fuel tank. Disconnect the fuel gauge at the tank and with a twelve volt test light well grounded probe the harness terminals with the key on (engine off). The fuel gauge should move when the sending unit wire is probed, and the test light should light dimly. Other terminals are a ground for the sending unit, a ground for the fuel pump, and power for the fuel pump. If the gauge moves when the sending unit wire is probed the problem is either the sending unit or a bad harness connection. If the gauge doesn't move during the probe there is a wiring problem (open circuit) or a bad dash gauge. Hope this helps.

2001 caddy sts. engine shuts off, all dash gauges go off, dase light go off, check engine a nd batt. light come on. car will re start right away. cleand as many ground as i could find, no help. it happens...

It could be more than just the ground,it could be the ,TPS sensor, fuel filter ,spark plugs or wires ,bad computer much more. A fast solution if you know how to work on you own car get a check engin test to find out what the problem is, you dont want to pay for process of elimination.

Car wont start. I have gas, pump works, i just dont have spark, coil works, rotor turn .

check spark plugs or spark pug wires. These are the most common issues with no spark. 2. check all fuses. 3. check ground or battery cables. If ground is bad it can cause a no spark. Motor turns? or ROTORs TURN? If motor turns your getting spark.
