Question about Mitsubishi Lancer

2 Answers

Hi! I am familiar with the auto timing advancer that uses the vacuum advance technique. However, while working on a Mitsubishi Lancer Glxi, I noticed that it doesnt have the usual vacuum advance. Could you help me find out what type of "timing advance mechanism this car has"?

What model year is the car you are referring to?
In the newer model years, timing advance is controlled electronically by the computer.

In late model vehicles with an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) combined with multipoint fuel injection, the ECU takes inputs from several sensors (engine speed, throttle position, coolant temperature, emissions & air temperature etc.) and adjusts the quantity of fuel to the injectors and also the ignition timing to achieve optimum engine efficiency. Therefore, a vacuum advance system is not needed beause it does not perform as effectively as the ECU derived timing calculation.

You didn't specify year, but i will assume it is computer controlled timing and advance, meaning the computer retards/advances timing using all the engines sensors...hope that helps

A good starting point to find the problem is to have the vehicle scanned for trouble codes, which will provide info about the problem area of the vehicle. Auto Zone and Advance Auto can do the scan. Once you ahve the codes, you can ook them up on the web for more informaton.

The car slows downs and has stopped when i turn the airconditioner on

Possible that the engine needs a full retuning of the fuel and Ignition timing with a check on the auto RPM advance when the AC is turned on.
If it possible that when the AC load comes on to the engine the IDLING speed is not changed and so it flutters to stop. The auto advance- vacuum - mut be checked.

basic rules.

1 remove the cable.
2. use the right size socket and insert it to the plug.
3. loosen the plug and clean or replace.
4. tighten it back.
5. do it one at a time. it would be confusing to install the wires back if you pull them at the same time.

tnx 4 using fixya and tnx 4 asking,
