Question about 1981 Ford F 100

2 Answers

I have a 1970 Ford pk truck F100 and I am trying to remove the rear brake drum. Cant seem to find a diagram to show me how it comes off. I see two holes that would make one think it needs twisted off. But it wont budge.

It pulls straight out once the wheel is off. Sometimes there are little flat spring steel clips on one or more wheel studs- look for these before fighting with them.

Sometimes, with drum brakes, they will be worn to where there is a groove in them with a high spot at the inner edge of the bore (next to where the shoes contact the drum). When this is the case it's easiest to back the adjusters off before trying to pull the drum, as the shoes can be adjusted so far out that they won't clear the inner edge of the drum.

Other than that it's just a matter of tapping, wiggling and swearing. You'll get it, no worries.

Make sure you have your wheels chocked or blocked to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Make sure the parking brake is released. Back off the brake adjustment screw through the rear slot one the inside of the brake drum assembly. It should then slide right off.

You need a brake adjusting tool to adjust that brake adjustment screw.

sounds like you have it apart and not so sure about reassembly. If these are drum brakes try looking at the drum brake change videos on Youtube, ericthecarguy (ETCG) is a good one. Drum brakes are all basically similar with the main difference usually around self adjusters.

remove brake adjuster plugs from rear of brake back plate. back off brake pads and the drums should slide off. occasionally the drums are groved and rusted so you will need to tap on the drums with a dead blow hammer to help free them up

Cant get the rear brake drum off over the shoes

Behind the backing plate of the wheel look for the adjusting hole . It is at the bottom end and has a rubber plug in it. Remove plug and use a brake spoon of screw driver and turn little gear looking thing inside hole. This will pull brake shoe away from drum. It will turn for what seems a long time but just keep going until it stops. Then try to remove drum may have to use hammer. If not turn in other direction until it stops and try again to remove drum, with a hammer until it comes off
