Question about 2001 Subaru Forester

Open Question

My 2001 Subaru Forester is about to undergo it's 3rd clutch transplant. First at 60,000kms, second at 130,000kms. We now have 170,000kms and we appear to be going down the same road. Smell of burning clutch plates. Poor control of the clutch peddle operation. Spring clicking noises with full travel to the floor without clutch operation, at 170,000kms. Poor control of the clutch engaging and disengauging. Lots of shuddering when power is applied to the driving wheels. What is wrong with the Subaru design for this model year, and what is the repair solution? Brian Dobson MISSISSAUGA ON Canada penbrian@yahoo.com

SOURCE: Procedure for replacing rear wheel bearings 2000 Forester

i'm assuming you don't have a hubshark, this is a tool that will alllow you to remove the bearing while the knuckle is attached to the car,you may be able to rent this tool at a auto prts store .if not you need to remove the entie knuckle, first remove the trailing arm bolt, then the lateral link bolt{long and stubborn bolt},disassemble the brake shoes and parking brake cable, abs sensor if equipped the knuckle to strut bolt{no marking necessary they are not eccentric} then you need a to use or borrow a press to remove hub and bearings good luck

It's possible its the CV, but check your tire pressure, and you may want to jack up that corner of the car and give the tire a spin by hand...not only spin it, but pull the top in and out and look for excessive play. Also look for wear marks on the inside and outside of the tire...

Will a 2001 legacy subaru tranaxel fit a 1999 subaru forester

If its a manual transmission then yes but the style of clutch needs to be the same.
If its an automatic then the difference was the basic design and style of filtration - internal vs external.

2004 forester (man. trans) when accelerating in 1st/2nd, 3rd at low rpm's get a grinding sound momentarly from engine/transmission..sound lasts several seconds, then goes away.

You have a Boxer engine so its not the engine..
Its in the box and it is either the Layshaft bearings .or the input shaft into the clutch which would be the clutch thrust bearing or the bush in the crankshaft,,all these will give you the same noise but if it get worse then we will have to have another talk and fix it ..
Let me know how you get on Ron

The clutch itself isnt the problem its the linkages going to it. Gheck all the joints and cable for wear or cable not running freely.
