So I take it that I should just take out the bulb and not worrie about it?

1 Answer

My engine light has come on also, I think the mechanic finally took out the bulb to cure my problem. But it has been driven hard, however look into your manifold intake gasket for problems; just a guess from my experience in a total engine overhaul due to oil pump going out with a teenager driving it till block cracked......Brother.

Hi Fred,
There could be a number of reasons for this.

As I do not have much detail and do not know your knowledge of cars, I will explain the basic principle at work here and hopefully that might give you a clue as to what the problem might be:

In all modern cars the key fob (plastic part of the key) has a coded electronic chip moulded inside. There is a sensor just under the steering column cover, usually right next to the ignition switch. This sensor activates whenever a key is turned in the ignition switch and the sensor reads code stored in the chip in the key fob.

When all is good, the engine will start as expected as the keys code will have been programmed into the cars engine management control system and the key is recognised as a matching/authorised key. No match, the engine won't start - a very good safety feature.

Some reasons why this may give the fault you are experiencing:
  • You bought a replacement key from the Dodge Dealer, but the new key has either not been programmed into the cars engine management system or the programming was not successful
  • You bought a non-chipped key from a non-dealer and had it cut from the original, but were not aware of the need for a chipped key and the need to have the new key programmed into the management system. A non-chipped key will not work, ever unless the management system is compromised
  • There may be a fault with the sensor
  • Very unusual, but the chip in the key may have been damaged
Do you have an original spare key to try?

Hope this sheds some light on your problem :)

Engine turns over but won't start on first try. Clicking sound coming from inside dash when trying to start car. After three or four revolutions of engine the engine finally starts, but labored almos

Glad to know this solution. The Format of Fixya sent me this cure as at some point I answered a problem of your make and model of car. It does not reference if I answered your problem or what I said as a solution. Chip problems may have been mentioned, and a new ignition switch may be a better solution if a Mechanic is receiving pay to work on someone else's car. Its fine for your own car repair. Thanks

1999 vauhall zarira flashing engine light, starts but want run

Hi when you say it starts do you mean it turns engine over but not running , if so open you key fob up to see if the small transponder chip is still there it will be on the side of the main prt of the fob itself as most of the time these fall out when keys are dropped and deprecate losing the transponder chip if it is still there and no spare key you will have to get it recoded/ chipped

I lost my key to my 1996 firebird. so i had the ignition changed out. at the same time my battery went dead. i put a new battery in and the car wont start all lights come on just wont turn on. the...

Your ignition takes a specific key, they are chipped. If the ignition was changed and the decoder wasn't , this is the problem. You may be able to call a dealer ship and give the VIN number and get the measurement in ohms of the chip, Maybe. Then go to a hard ware store and they can duplicate the key you have with a chip key. Be prepared , this is not a $2.00 key

The dealer is right...the 89 firebird did not come with a chipped key antitheft system. You should never have had a key with a chip to begin with.

It will, the chip generally "tricks" the computer into thinking more air is coming into the motor, so it dumps more fuel into the motor. The outcome is a rich exhuast, which causes the 02 sensors to give a different reading than what the air sensor is giving. So the computer will read as if there is a problem.
